Sometimes, instead of explaining everything happening in my RPG world, I ask the players: "Why do YOU think this is happening?" Their theories become rumors, subplots, or actual canon. It's collaborative worldbuilding disguised as me pretending I had a plan all along. #TTRPG #Worldbuilding

My favorite kind of RPG worldbuilding happens when players ask a question I never considered. I make up an answer. They take it seriously. Three sessions later, that detail has become a major piece of the setting. Worldbuilding is just improvisation that nobody caught in time. #TTRPG #OSR

There's something about the black-and-white art in old RPG books—and modern OSR games—that just works. A few lines, heavy shadows, weird monsters, questionable adventurers... and your imagination does the rest. Give me evocative line art over glossy perfection any day. #TTRPG #OSR

Another thing Diablo got right : loot. Finding a weapon wasn't exciting because it was a +2 sword. It was exciting because you didn't know WHAT you were getting. Roll the dice. Generate the item. Let the players figure out if it's treasure or trouble. #TTRPG # Diablo

30 years of Diablo. 🔥🔥🔥 And as a TTRPG player, I still love how perfectly simple the original setup was: A troubled town. A dungeon underneath it. Go down. Kill monsters. Find loot. Go deeper. Sometimes you don't need an epic campaign pitch. You just need stairs going down.

I don't need every TTRPG mechanic to be realistic. I need it to create interesting decisions. If a rule makes players stop, look at each other, and say: "Okay... this is probably a terrible idea, but hear me out." That's a good rule. #TTRPG #OSR

One of my favorite parts of GMing is stealing mechanics from video games. Latest victim: ARC Raiders. I liked its gear-modding idea, so I turned it into a weapon & armor mod system for Star Wars D6. Good mechanics don't care what medium they came from. Steal. Convert. Roll dice. #TTRPG #Gaming

Running Dawn of Defiance using the old WEG Star Wars D6 rules. Early Empire. Rebels barely exist. The PCs are nobodies who picked the wrong fight with the right enemy. No destiny. No chosen ones. Just a growing list of reasons to hate the Empire. Exactly how a rebellion should start. #TTRPG #D6

GM preparation: What I want: carefully planned encounters, important NPCs, dramatic reveals. What happens: the players become obsessed with Steve, a bartender I invented. sessions later, they're solving Steve's problems and hunting his brother. I guess the NPC has a campaign now. #TTRPG #OSR

One thing OSR games taught me: A 10-foot pole, some rope, chalk, and a terrible plan can be more useful than half the abilities on a character sheet. Especially the terrible plan. The terrible plan is always essential equipment. #OSR #TTRPG

I post about tabletop RPGs & OSR, retro/indie games, coding & tech, and anime - plus whatever nerdy rabbit hole I'm currently exploring. If that's your kind of feed, give me a follow. I'll probably follow you down the rabbit hole. #TTRPG #OSR #Code

What keeps pulling me back to OSR games isn't nostalgia. It's the idea that the answer isn't always on your character sheet. Ask questions. Experiment. Make a ridiculous plan. Use the environment. Convince the GM it might actually work. #OSR #TTRPG

One dangerous side effect of knowing how to code: You stop thinking, "I wish this old game had that feature." You start thinking, "How hard could it be to make it myself?" Three hours later you're on a 20-year-old file documentation and questioning every decision that brought you here. #Code

RPG confession: I have enough games to run campaigns for the next 30 years. Naturally, this means I spend my free time looking for new RPGs. At this point, collecting RPGs and actually playing RPGs are two completely different hobbies. #TTRPG #OSR

Traveller character creation remains one of my favorite ideas in RPGs. Most games ask: "Who do you want to be?" Traveller asks: "Okay, but what happened to you before the adventure started?" Sometimes the answer is success. Sometimes character creation IS the adventure. #TTRPG #Traveller

Every time I watch a good fantasy anime, the GM part of my brain immediately starts stealing ideas. Interesting magic system? Stolen. Cool faction? Stolen. Weird monster? Absolutely stolen. Being a GM is basically consuming media and whispering, "I can use that." 🎲 #TTRPG #OSR #ANIME

Nothing humbles you quite like Googling for RPG conversion ideas, finding the perfect discussion… and realizing it's a post YOU made five years ago asking the exact same question. Past me had questions. Present me was really hoping past me had answers. 😂

GMing and coding are the same disease. You build a system, imagine every edge case, then your players find the one input that breaks everything. Debugging with snacks. :) #TTRPG #CODING

Star Wars D6 understood something important: You don't need 37 abilities to feel like you're in Star Wars. Grab some D6s, jump behind cover, shoot at stormtroopers, completely botch the roll, and start improvising. Fast, cinematic, chaotic. Exactly as Star Wars should be. #TTRPG #OSR #D6

Dark Sun showdown. Shattered Lands vs. Wake of the Ravager. Shattered Lands is tighter and more polished. Ravager is bigger, more ambitious... and held together with bug-infested duct tape. Which one do you prefer? I'm Team Shattered Lands. #TTRPG #Darksun #OSR

The older I get, the more I appreciate RPG rules that get out of the way. Give me meaningful choices, dangerous combat, quick rulings, and enough mechanics to keep things interesting. I don't need a rule for everything. Sometimes "roll the dice and let's find out" is enough. #TTRPG #OSR #RPG

WEG Star Wars introduced a lot of us to the D6 System, but it didn't stop there. D6 Space, Adventure, Fantasy, OpenD6... simple rules, huge flexibility, buckets of dice. Decades later, D6 is still one of those systems I keep coming back to. Sometimes you just need more D6s. #TTRPG #RPG #D6

Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager (1994) went bigger than Shattered Lands. More Athas, more exploration, more ambition... and unfortunately, more bugs. It's rough around the edges, but when it works, it's still one of the best attempts at putting Dark Sun into a video game. #gaming #RPG

Anime question: What's a series you started with absolutely zero expectations and ended up loving? Not the obvious classics. Give me the one you randomly tried at 11 PM and suddenly it was 3 AM and you had responsibilities in the morning. #Anime

Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (1993) still holds up surprisingly well. Athas feels brutal, exploration matters, and the turn-based combat gives you plenty of options. It's clunky by modern standards, but it absolutely nails the Dark Sun atmosphere. Still worth playing. #RPG #TTRPG #OSR

With Dark Sun making its return to D&D, I'm revisiting the old Dark Sun PC games. They weren't perfect, but they captured Athas better than most licensed RPGs of the era. Time to see how well they hold up after all these years. #TTRPG #DARKSUN

Finished Drova and came away impressed. It feels like a love letter to classic Gothic-style RPGs: no hand-holding, meaningful exploration, tough choices, and a world that rewards curiosity. If you miss old-school RPG design, this one is worth your time. #RPG #Gaming

The overlap between programmers and GMs is bigger than people think. Both spend hours designing systems, trying to predict user behavior... ...and then watch everything break. Debugging and GMing are basically the same hobby. #TTRPGcommunity #RPG #OSR

One of my favorite parts of GMing isn't running combat. It's watching players come up with a plan I never considered... then quietly pretending I planned for it all along. The best improv usually starts with, "Well... I guess that's happening now." #TTRPGcommunity #RPG #TTRPG

One thing I'm trying out in my Outsiders Beyond campaign is a detective board. Every clue, suspect, corporation, and conspiracy goes on the board as the players uncover it. Just a growing web of connections the players can obsess over. It's been a lot of fun to build. #RPG #TTRPG #OSR

SKALD: Against the Black Priory. It somehow feels like an old DOS CRPG and an OSR campaign at the same time. Brutal fights, weird mysteries, and zero interest in holding your hand. If Ultima, Darklands, and Call of Cthulhu had a very strange child, it'd be this. #skald #RPG #OSR #gaming

They might have some pretty stiff competition in the Lovecraftian RPG space, but Graham Walmsley is one of the best horror game designers and Julian Simpson one of the best conspiracy horror storytellers.
