It is the memory of a public figure who repeatedly used her platform to oppose equality, to legitimise prejudice, and to stand against changes that would have made life safer and more dignified for queer people. For some of us, that is not abstract politics. It is personal history. We are still living with the damage of those attitudes, and some of us are still healing from the world they helped create.

That is why many LGBTQIA+ people will not mourn her. Not because we believe every death deserves celebration, but because we refuse to pretend that a harmful public record becomes harmless at the end of a life.
Widdecombe was part of a political culture that treated LGBTQIA+ existence as a problem to be managed, debated, or corrected.
Those decisions and arguments had consequences. They fed shame, fear, silence, and exclusion. They gave cover to people who wanted to keep queer people outside the circle of full dignity.

And when people say "that was a different time," it does not erase the impact. The effects lasted. The language lasted. The harm lasted.
Many of us grew up under policies and attitudes that made us feel unsafe, unwelcome, or lesser, and those wounds do not disappear just because the person responsible is gone. So no, we do not owe grief to someone whose public life helped uphold that damage. We can acknowledge her death without rewriting her record.

If you want to post about this honestly, the strongest stance is not celebration. It is refusal. Refusal to sanitise the past. Refusal to call harm
"debate." Refusal to act as though
LGBTQIA+ people should feel grateful to those who spent years opposing our rights. Some of us are still healing from what people like her helped normalise, and that truth deserves to be said plainly.

Okay, so, my writing challenge. I was right. I'm shit at doing the randomiser in Excel etc. So I did this with Powerpoint. (Using a template from someone else!) And yes, I'm well aware that the results slide has the two options the wrong way round!

Boy is making me watch Drag Race. Since it started 100 years ago I’ve watch the equivalent of one episode. Those were some of the worst minutes of my life. This is adding to it. This is one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen. There are no redeeming features.
