This is how you do visual storytelling, just for reference.

The main character, in flashback, in his very first appearance in this comic, having been knocked down (apparently) in a fight by another youth, he looks up and blood is running from his nose and tears from his eyes. His assailant is only visible as a shadow on the ground.

The same character on his knees. Whatever it is that has been haunting his uncle's house, a skeletal shadow made of ink, looms behind him. He looks up and ink is pouring from his mouth and eyes. The panel composition is nigh-identical to that of the first page.

What follows is an exercise in empathy and also a sumptuous banquet of world-building. Paul meets a lot of wolves. Each one took a different road to reach the Great Pack. The grand assembly is described in an absolutely breathtaking passage which left me wondering, every single time I read it, “Holy shit Rob how are you doing this with words?” Rob has stated his personal belief that storytelling is magical in its power to create entire worlds from nothing, and his description of the Great Pack arriving from the length and breadth of the land is a definite mic drop moment to his dissertation. When I read it, I want to believe.
