Pretty sure the answer to, "Why do my potatoes go black after cooking?" is: You've burnt them. Don't do that.

I think you mean the Department of War. The tech company has faced fierce backlash ever since it announced a deal with the Department of War last week.

My hiking buddy introduced me to Miner's lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) aka California lettuce not long ago and today I found it in abundance. What I foraged today made for a tasty dinner salad. The ancestors would be proud. #Foraging #FreeFood #WildFood #Foodsky

This is your regular reminder that whenever you watch a medical drama and a chaplain character just, like, never appears, that's weird. Chaplains are a constant presence in hospitals. They're considered part of the care team, and it's super odd that (most) medical shows pretend that isn't the case.

Just look at these sweet little earthfans (Thelephora terrestris) popping up out of season. We've had quite the rain and cold spell this week, so I see why they might be confused on what day or month we're in. Location: Ryan Ranch, Monterey, California, USA #FungiFriday🍄🗓️ #FungiFriends🍄📸

It's still #FungiFriday🍄🗓️ here on the West Coast, so here are some pine spikes (Chroogomphus vinicolor.) You may look at these photos and say: Robin, these aren't growing in pine duff. And you'd be right. However, this flush is between two pines that have oaks between them. #FungiFriends🍄📷

The orange is just where it's drying out. Lion's mane loves water, so don't be afraid of over misting.
110
Rev. Robin Wells (they/them) @roblation.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
That looks about right for how lion's mane grow kits go. You could harvest what you have there and continue to mist daily to probably get another flush.

There are some helpful ID apps and books out there -- some more useful than others. I've personally taken more photos of wild mushrooms than eating them. I also start with a small sample to cook and eat to test my personal tolerance (I have food allergies.) As always, "Don't munch on a hunch."

Connecting with experienced foragers in your area and taking foraging classes / walks is a good way to gain experience on how to ID. Techniques are more than visual ID. There's smell, location, proximity to other flora / trees, season, spore print...."

These look like Stubble Rosegill. Does the mushroom have a volva sac base? Sometimes people mistake these for Death Caps which have a ring on the stem and it appears that these mushrooms do not have the Death Cap ring.

Since the rebranding of the Department of Defense is now the Department of War, can reporters please start calling "defense startups" "war startups" instead? It would really help with clarity for the reader. Thanks.
