This actually makes me feel better about the idiocies which my institution imposes on me. They're often ridiculous and frequently innumerate, but I've never had something as mind-blowingly meaningless as this used to evaluate my worth.

Ultimately we don't have the option in the UK if we're university academic staff since our managers are highly motivated by the REF 2029.ref.ac.uk and if we are not generating "outputs" (journal papers) we will start having to have some very awkward conversations.

That said, the current state of academic publishing is utterly appalling. This is the contents slide for a talk I recently did on the subject for our PhD students.

2) Peer review, at least in my field, is mostly positive and improves papers. I'm working on a paper right now where reviewers' suggestions have greatly improved the model and will mean that the final paper is considerably better.

Disagree for two reasons. 1) I've spent a goodly chunk of my career editing journals at various levels and seen the amount of low-quality rubbish that we filter out so you don't have to make the same assessment.

The fallout from the collapse of this glacier - a torrent of mud surging down the valley - killed hundreds of people. Gone, in a flash. Those people were wiped out by anthropogenic climate change. Our governments are simply not responding quickly enough to this disaster which is already upon us.
