was sat at a cafe reading @chanda.blacksky.app The Edge of Space-Time and became aware of a 3yr old watching me quietly. so I started reading out loud and they seemed quite content. I hope one day they'll be in school physics class and think "wait have i heard about wave function before?!"

really you just have to learn to cope with being uncomfortable sometimes. all those times people say "don't coddle children" that "life isn't fair" that you have to prepare them for the "real world": this is it. this is The Real World and sometimes, as adults, we're uncomfortable. cope.

we really need, as a population, to get over this idea that "discomfort" equals "i'm in danger". does being a visible minority in a place, exorcism when you're used to not being a minority, cause discomfort. yes. OK. let's take some time to reflect on that and learn and not just say "Unsafe!"

I had the opposite when I would go to Australia (Sydney area) in their summer: how could it be midsummer and going dark that early?

When @aknighton.bsky.social’s publisher announced its closure, it could have—should have—spelled the end of his fantasy adventure series still in progress. But never say never in the world of fantasy! britishfantasysociety.org/bringing-a-b...

also maybe it's just my subset of acquaintances. but year round all I ever hear is "I know everybody prefers summer but I actually prefer autumn/winter" I rarely hear people say that they prefer summer. (except for other people with SAD)

I get pretty severe seasonal depression so no amount of cosy clothing and hot drinks will make me like this time of year more than summer. sorry. doesn't mean I don't like those autumnal and wintery things. but the lack of daylight can do one.

well bloody hell. published in 2000. and here we are. #booksky
excerpt from House of Leaves. text reads:
"In the future, readers of newspapers and magazines will probably view news pictures more as illustrations than as reportage, since they will be well aware that hey can no longer distinguish between a genuine image and one that has been manipulated. Even if news photographers and editors resist the temptations of electronic manipulation as they are likely to do, the credibility of all reproduced images will be dimin- ished by a climate of reduced expecta- tions. In short, photographs will not seem as real as they once did."

you don't have to turn everything into a performance metric. sometimes you can just join in, be crap, laugh at/with your mates/ colleagues who are more invested in it (with kindness).

I sort of get it, especially if it's a "mandatory fun" thing in a workplace and if you don't join in you're "not a team player". but it's just so tragically sad that people can't just be bad at something, approach it in a stupid fashion, not care. they have to "optimise it".

this post brought to you by @tpwky.bsky.social and their guest author having a pet vendetta against alzheimer's researchers as a group. (OK vendetta might be a strong word but he clearly has Opinions).

I love it when researchers develop a particular bee in their bonnet about some aspect of the subject they're researching. they go into it just willing to learn all about the topic and come out going "ok but that guy. that one guy!" and now they just want us all to join them in their vendetta.

Lingthusiasm has been a favourite of mine since 2019. I'm not a linguist but I love learning more about how languages and communication work and I really like how Gretchen and Lauren give a global perspective of linguistics including sign language. definitly worth a listen

coke and (lots of) booze probably shouldn't be a part of a family afternoon out. especially not if you're supposed to be supervising a toddler at a train station.

it's half past six on a Sunday why are half the people on this train so drunk they can't figure out how a train toilet works?! ok maybe not half, but I've had to shut the door for two separate guys who couldn't figure out the door close and were ready to just stay pissing wildly.

90 years ago, on the 4th of October 1936, antifascist counter protesters stopped a British Union of Fascists march through London’s East End. The Metropolitan Police tried to clear the way for the fascists resulting in violent clashes known as the Battle of Cable Street. #otd #history 🗃️
The mounted police conduct a charge against the dense crowd to clear the way to Cable Street.

good morning! still eeking my way through House of Leaves. There's a reason I've given myself until the end of October to read this! and I've got Shadow Cabinet by Juno Dawson (HMRC book 2) on audio. I enjoy these but they are sometimes a little on the nose in terms of theme.

I'm progressing so slowly through this. partly my concentration had been atrocious recently, but also it is not designed to allow for rapid reading and smooth process. I'm at page 118* and it's starting to get a bit "choose your own advertising adventure" in terms of flow. *ish

went to the alternative market today. I try not to buy stuff for the sake of having stuff. but I do like seeing what people are creating. I did buy a tiny cute comic and a bottle of hot sauce. (and a mint chocolate sandwich cookie, consumed). yes good. (comic artist is @simonjcurd.bsky.social )
A small comic with an illustration of tiny creature hands holding earbuds surrounded by leaves, I'm shades of orange and, a bottle of dark hot sauce from the company Balefire called Chupacabra. "tonka bean and stout mole sauce". both on a mustard yellow background.
