It's never knowledge that's the problem but its application. And when does limitation, or control, become oppression? To quote Douglas Adams: people are a problem. Easy to see the Gas-Lit Empire as the Big Bad, but the idea was utopian, or at least utopian-adjacent. Those pesky people, though...

Didn't know there was a Luddite fringe. I must consult my hairdresser. Seriously, sounds as if he (I presume it's a he; please forgive me if I'm stereotyping) needs to learn his history. Or read Rod Duncan

I have truly reconsidered the attitude I had of the Luddites (year 2 middle school, as was, so informed from around ten or eleven) since reading your books. Not all in one go, because expanding wisdom creeps up on you by degrees, but bit by bit. Power to the people etc etc

The more *gestures at everything* the more I sympathise with @rodduncan.bsky.social's Gas-Lit Empire

1. Environmentally destructive plagiarism machines designed so plutocrats can fire - sorry, restructure - employees, and damn the world to hell? No ta. Further we get down this timeline the more convinced I am that the Luddites were right

Hi Dion, is that episode 17? It sounds really interesting but I don't have podbean (or anything else helpful, come to that)

I would be prepared to cut slack for the time and culture he lived in if it weren't for the aforementioned horribleness and, yes, some deeper biases

Not only was he a horrible, horrible man but his system sucks too. Even allowing for the stuff subsequently discovered (computers etc), just scan your way through the 300s sometime. I work in a library and it makes absolutely no sense

Sputnik? I mean, I've no idea how big Sputnik was, but there was a round bit and a lot of traily bits, right? Anyhoo, I'm thinking space. A very small moon? Or Oceanic - some kind of buoy?

I'm not back yet either but, especially as I've found a moment to finally delete Twitter, it seems only fair to let you know I'm still alive, still lurking. Best to you all; speak soon, I hope

Hello all, and how are you doing? Just wanted to say, especially to new followers and old friends, that I'm sorry I've been so quiet on here recently. I've been long-term ill and haven't had the energy for discourse

Conspiracy Theory Book Club. (My latest cartoon for Guardian Books)
Four figures sit around a table spot lit by a single bulb.
Title : ‘The Gruffalo’ does not go down well at the Conspiracy Theorist Book Club
In turn, they give their opinions.
Conspiracist 1 “Typical pro-mouse propaganda, paid for by the powerful rodent lobby”
Conspiracist 2 “The creature has obviously escaped from a lab, yet the “author” never mentions this”
Conspiracist 3 “gruffalo is an anagram of ‘A FROG FLU’. Coincidence? I think not.
Conspiracist 4 ‘These elite writers will not be happy until we are all living in the woods and eating nuts”

To celebrate #Wordle1000 here is my cartoon about wordle addiction for the Guardian. You can get a print of it here: www.tomgauld.com/shop
A man lies on a couch and talks to his psychiatrist.
Her: So, if I understand correctly: you've become so obsessed with Wordle that you can only use five-letter words.
Him: Quite right, sadly.
Her: How long has this been going on?
Him: About three weeks.
Her: And does it affect your daily life?
Him: Makes basic tasks quite tough
Her: One answer would be to stop playing.
Him: Never!
Her: Or, try something with a larger vocabulary: Scrabble, crosswords?
Him: Smart! Enjoy other games, learn extra words... heard worse ideas.
Her: Come back and see me in two weeks.
Him (leaving): Great. Adieu!

Afternoon all. Just got Friday's #blog scheduled. It seems like I spend a lot longer on that bloody thing than I do on my real #writing; I certainly wasted good minutes of my life creating a pie-chart for the sake of a weak gag. How's things with you?

HI all, and how are we doing at the moment? Just wanted to say sorry for not being particularly chatty recently - life has rather got away from me recently. But I'm still here, still lurking, and - as ever - always listening if you want to talk. Hope you're doing well

My latest Guardian Books cartoon.
A series of unhappy people sit at desks. They are labelled:
The Author of her own misfortune.
The Screenwriter of his own catastrophe.
The Dramatist of her own imbroglio.
The Poet of his own malaise.
The Podcasters of their own debacle.
The Tik-tokker of her own vexation.

Writing conflict 1. Set up instrumental characters to obstruct protagonists 2. For realism, give them motives of their own 3. Oh shit, those motives are pretty reasonable and sympathetic 4. Now I'm going to look a right bastard for murdering these people 5. Despair of writing, go for walk

A cartoon about libraries for the Guardian.
Title: Methods of defending your local library from government cuts.

1. Comminity Support: families stand round the licrary with placards
2. Fortifications: The library now has crenellations, a high wall and guards with spears.
3. Camouflage: the library has been painted with a camouflage pattern.
4. Black magic: the library has been painted with a huge pentagram , a sorceror casts a spell from an altar.
5. Time Travel: weird machinery is attached to the library, it is in a prehistoric jungle, a dinosaur walks past.
6. Disguise: the library has been dressed to look like a vape shop
7. Attack!: the library has tank tracks and large mechanical arms, it speeds forth, a librarian urges it on from a hatch at the top.

A Christmas cartoon for the Guardian. Happy holidays, everyone!
A figure points at a bookshelf in the shape of a Christmas tree which is decorated with lights and has a star on top and says: "It combines the festive jollity of a regular Christmas tree with the clear message that I'd like every one of my gifts to be a book."
