An excerpt from THE CALL OF QLULU

Chapter 1

"Agent Lulu Vishna, you have the right to remain silent," said Detective Martin something-or-other. The middle-aged cue ball reeked of celebrity-brand tequila and wore the permanent scowl of a man who’d just huffed fresh cat shit. Across the interrogation table from Lulu, he sat beside Detective Rusty, his considerably younger partner with the pleasant face of a man who had not smelled said cat shit. Detective Martin reached over and uncuffed Lulu, spun the cuffs together in one hand. "Do I really have to read the rest off for a fellow law enforcement officer?"

"Read the rest of what?" said Lulu, sliding her colossal rectangular glasses back up her nose. Not by the bridge—like a dork—of course, but by stretching her gangly fingers from hinge to hinge.

The detectives traded glares; the elder's less than enthused, the younger's on the line between entertained and disbelief.

"What?" Lulu moaned, dipping her head in shame. "What did I say wrong this time?"

"Your reputation certainly precedes you," said Detective Martin.

Lulu lunged forward with a gaping smile and slapped both hands on the table. "I have a reputation?! Is it cool?"

"Miss Vishna," said Detective Rusty. His Sunken Southern accent was as smooth as honey, despite that most other people made it sound like keying a corroded car. "You do know your big, eh, showdown with that Biggs character was televised, right?"

"Ohhhhhh," Lulu drawled. "Did I win?"

"You're in a fuckin' hospital gown," Detective Martin snapped. "What do you think?"
