Roxy Music — Flesh + Blood. Some will no doubt say this doesn’t pass “doesn’t suck” bar, but I’m a fan of both incarnations.

I write an "About Me" paragraph after my signature. It can help sometimes ensure what you write is taken seriously. If you include it in the letter proper, you're distracting from telling your student's story.

(2) next paragraph about how you know the candidate -- how long, what capacity, (3) 2 or 3 paragraphs about specific instances of excellence that you've observed (if you can reference the criteria here that's great), (4) summary paragraph.

Had a great conversation about fairness in recommender systems with Kyle Polich on the @data-skeptic.bsky.social podcast. We talked about how the challenges differ from other areas of ML and how to move beyond narrow formal concepts of fairness. Now live: dataskeptic.com/blog/episode...

CU Boulder ran exactly this script last semester. (Lack of consultation, etc.) Look for the next step, which they are doing here, creating internal grant competitions for "best use of this thing we bought without asking anybody".

Such nonsense. In grad school, I got assigned to TA a FORTRAN class without ever having written a program in that venerable language. The only requirement was that I could read the book and figure things out.

One key takeaway: Under the right conditions, lack of profile portability might not be an obstacle to a recommender system "algorithm store". 2/3
