Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Really makes you wonder how much we've potentially missed out on over the years by not having an exclamation mark in every game title. And why stop at one? Why not "Into the Dead!!!!"? 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Making software that can't do illegal hacking is easy. What OpenAI et al are doing is trying to make software that CAN do illegal hacking, but chooses not to because they asked it nicely. If that sounds like a stupid idea, it might be because it is. 000

Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Leaps great distances? Ditto. Able to take an amount of damage that would easily kill anyone else? That's fairly unique, but not obviously appealing as a game character. Curiously, Spider-Man ticks most of those boxes too, and many more-interesting ones. 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Here's the weird thing about Wolverine as a character - he's something of a famous bad-ass, but I don't know that there's anything about him that's particularly unique for a videogame. Rapid healing? Lots of game characters have that, even human ones. Able to defeat dozens of enemies? Ditto... 110
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Tetris probably, and like.... 95% of other games. 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 01/09/2026There's a bit of magical thinking here, as if the only reason any big tech problems haven't been solved is that the right government official hasn't demanded it yet, rather than because they're technically or conceptually intractable. 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Some of the interface and movement issues of VR might be solved in a holodeck, but you might introduce a bunch of new issues, some of which Kinect struggled with - e.g. that 1:1 interaction isn't actually ideal for a lot of purposes. Abstraction is often a feature, not a bug. 000

Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 09/07/2026I don't really understand what it would mean for MS to "spread too thin", but I can imagine many of their studios feeling spread pretty thin once all these layoffs are done. 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 29/06/2026I suspect that many will not be able to pay for it all, but do we actually know that they "pinky promised", or is that speculation? If it's the RAM makers rigging the prices, what's preventing the hyperscalers from just saying no? 400
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 29/06/2026Oh for sure - any legal argument that starts with "Assuming perfect competition..." is likely to be a loser. It doesn't even have to be a lie though - just a theoretical concept unlikely to exist in practice. 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 29/06/2026That's a fair point, though unlike most markets the big players here all want more supply than is available (and to prevent the others from having it), and can afford to lose tens of billions on it, so they're bidding each other up rather than bidding the suppliers down. 100
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 29/06/2026Of course, though as the link suggests, that could take years and is only worth doing if you think this increased demand will persist. So not having done it yet is not proof of illegal conspiracy. 220
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 29/06/2026Aren't they selling every bit of RAM they can make though? If so, this looks like a problem of oligopsony to me - a few buyers that can outprice the rest of the market combined. 3180
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 29/06/2026OK, but like.... how far behind? Are we talking inches or miles? 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Kinda crazy to see these headlines basically back to back. The idea of any game, even a new GTA, being a massive system-seller in this market just feels like wishful thinking to me. 010
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 12/06/2026If we can't agree on whether billionaires are a policy failure, can we at least agree that something is awry if there are trillionaires? 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 10/06/2026I'm curious if anyone can make an argument for new Xbox/PlayStation consoles in the near future other than "They already committed to some of the R&D". 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 07/06/2026Please don't mistake my cynicism for a desire for this not to work, or an attack on those excited about it. I hope they make something great 🫠 000
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 06/06/2026A fair point, though every game needs an art style, and a unique art style is a big selling point. The ability to run on a console that only a few dedicated collectors still have is perhaps less obviously beneficial. 100
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 06/06/2026I never suggested otherwise. I take it you just want to win an internet argument, and I'm not really here for that. 100
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 06/06/2026The key phrase there is "limits of the time", not "limits of 40 years earlier". Hundreds of other teams worked with those limitations and most failed to create anything so lasting, so I'm not sure there's much of a correlation there. If it were that simple, everyone would be doing it. 100
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 06/06/2026When it comes to design, I often agree with that. When it comes to programming though, limitations can certainly lead to more interesting optimizations, but it's a bit more speculative that it will lead to some kind of experience that you wouldn't have had without those limitations. 100
Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 06/06/2026That wouldn't surprise me at all, but "We have someone who wants to do this" isn't a business model, right? Compare it with something like Mina the Hollower, which is more "This is how you remember games like this", without the restrictions of actually having to work on decades-old consoles. 210

Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 20/05/2026Raising prices for consumers isn't illegal, even if some of the events that lead to it were. I don't see how anyone makes a serious case of this. 000

Rob Greensky @robgreennz.bsky.social · 13/05/2026From the limited details released on this, it really sounds like they started development of a game by deciding how many players it would have and how much revenue it would generate, and tried to work backwards from there. Weirdly, great art wasn't the result of that process. 000
