The difference is that my ignorance of geochemistry is extremely unlikely to have any negative consequences for anyone, ever. Low-information voters' obliviousness is not so harmless.

There are also issues with his "swarthy men." When I first read those books in elementary school, for some reason I decided that "swarthy" meant "hairy," and this let me avoid some unfortunate implications.

I don't think that's an accurate characterization when you consider Egypt and Jordan, rather than just Lebanon and Syria.

He usually announces the end to the war around mid-Sunday, to influence Asian markets before they open on Monday. He usually announces that he's about to destroy Iran on Fridays, maybe to blow off steam at the end of the week? I don't know what a 2 PM Monday announcement is.

They think they're going to be included among Trump's pardons. Most of those who thought similarly during his first term were disappointed.

This is why human judgment is a useful quality. A good officer should be able to distinguish between a necktie and a rad suit.

I'm pretty confident in my assertion that neckties are not required for safety.

I'd argue that there's a difference between a safety rule and an etiquette rule. If a senior officer orders you to breach etiquette in a harmless way, there's no reason not to obey.

The second was a bad guess. Azerbaijan is a small country, so it's not likely to be the only country touching 2 different bodies of water. The third was an absurd guess. Tibet isn't a country, doesn't touch any major bodies of water, and isn't even in that area of the world.

The first was a wrong answer, but a reasonable guess. Iraq is a big country, and it's in the right general area (although the contestant was a US Naval officer, and we were currently occupying Iraq, so he really ought to have had a better sense of the geography).

My favorite set of answers to a Final Jeopardy clue ("This is the only country that touches both the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf") were 1) Iraq 2) Azerbaijan 3) Tibet

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the disastrous Starbucks promotion was actually designed by its South Korean subsidiary, and so the political message was specifically intended. I haven't heard that about Converse's ads (yet, at least).

Biden was bad at public communication. Most Americans didn't know or didn't understand the policy actions of the Biden administration. Some of that was due to hostile mass media, but I don't grade presidents on a curve.

I'd recommend Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror, which talks extensively about a war fought before these norms were established (in this case, the Hundred Years War). Private military contractors roamed all over France and Italy, pillaging as they pleased.

It's amazing how well the regency that Henry V set up held together during Henry VI's childhood. It certainly had strains, but no bad breaks. But then Henry VI reached adulthood, and it became clear that he wasn't going to improve, and the system could no longer withstand the vacuum at its center.
