Eight. That’s why Terry looks so concerned.

That’s what happens when we all move on afterwards to the pub.

I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to this! Well, I could. But then I’d be forced to resort to lots of grandiloquent adjectives quite out of keeping with the world of Doctor Who novelisations.

Oh, I hope you won’t need the audio drama at all! Have fun with the book and thanks for being so kind!

We're gathering at Writing the Occult: Time & Place to talk about just this sort of thing - how you can nail time & place in speculative narratives. Mark joins Una McCormack, Rob Shearman & Simon Guerrier on a very special panel talking about using the TARDIS to make time and space infinite, too. 🧵⬇️

That wasn’t my breakfast, sadly. Lunch, tea time snack and high dinner. It’s how I keep my physique so trim.

Very possibly only me - and I’m very flattered by the comparisons!

So good to meet you at last, Nadia! Looking forward to a proper chat later!

How did I break the deadlock? I hope it was because you picked up my book from the shelf with enormous anger and heft and threw it into the bin!

Oh, lovely!

I’m very genuinely looking forward to seeing what you think…! I had such fun writing this one.

Oh, I love Chicago Tardis - and I love Chicago itself! If I’m wanted there, I’ll fly over in a heartbeat!

Let’s just say I had an awful lot of fun with it! I hope you give it a try and have fun with it too.

I did a lot of microphone roaring. I gave it tons of welly. In post-production it was felt that my performance was a bit one note, so that in many scenes my roars were replaced by Alistair Lock’s. So we continue a tradition - the pantomime horse gets played by two actors, with me at the back end.

Is if going to cool down soon, Ms Flamingo? I think part of my brain melted this afternoon and now I’m worried it might have been my most intellectual bit.

I thought we’d agreed to stop calling the entire editorial team at BBC Books that.

Hurrah! I’ll be going to that! I want to randomly subject people to my theories about Philip Hinchcliffe’s version of The Keys of Marinus.

It’s true. And I have become very much older since we last met up. There are now parts of my body that look so elderly they would cause Carl Sagan to recalculate the age of the universe.

Oh, thanks, Mondy! I shall give it a listen! I remember I was just about starting to write the first stories for that in the summer of 2006 - twenty long years ago. Dear God.

What a hugely kind thing to say! Thank you, Ellie! That message is a lovely gift to me too. I hope you have fun with Chimes!

Robert Shearman @robertshearman.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
And besides, I don’t think Chris Chibnall ever went. Russell certainly didn’t. I have no memory of Mark Gatiss. It wasn’t a “group” at all. It was just a place London based fans would congregate to drink crap beer, swap the odd fanzine, and laugh at The Androids of Tara. You would have been welcome.
030
Robert Shearman @robertshearman.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
It really wasn’t, you know. It was just a pub, and every month hundreds of fans would go. It was very welcoming and about the least exclusive thing you can imagine. Inevitably some people who later worked on the series went - but actually most didn’t. You make it sound like a secret fraternity.

Trust me - I’d only lose them down the back of the sofa like I do all my other keys.

Robert Shearman @robertshearman.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
Now that is a thing of beauty!
010
Robert Shearman @robertshearman.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
That’s lovely. Like most things you write, it’s often hard to imagine anyone enjoying it at all, let alone that it’ll cross the world and have such a long future! The young Rob would have been amazed - the old Rob is just very grateful. Thank you!

Robert Shearman @robertshearman.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
That’s very kind of you! Just for that, you get the desk nearer the window. The drawer sticks a bit, but you get a much better view of the Cardiff car parks. (I’ve grown very fond of those stories too - they’re so old now! Thank you for remembering them!)

We could do it together! We needn’t be in the office at the same time if you’d prefer. I could run the show Wednesday through Friday, and you could do the rest. :)

Very odd, as you know, is my bread and butter! It sounds right up my decidedly off-kilter street.

Thanks for persevering! Writing it was an act of masochism, but a very gleeful one! I hope you found a bit of glee too reading the whole thing.

I suspect there was a bit of mutual suspicion for a while - there were lots of self-conscious references to ‘trad’ and ‘rad’ writing which now seem a bit limiting! But I don’t recall any real hostility. I remember some very amiable chats with Lawrence, and everyone knew Alien Bodies was beautiful.
