RTen v0.27 is released. The two main changes are deprecation of the custom `.rten` format in favor of ONNX with external data and work to reduce binary size and compile times by making code non-generic and sharing code between different data types of the same bit-width - github.com/robertknight...

You know what’s harder than performance optimization? …Deoptimization. It’s a pretty fun concept you use every day without realizing it. The *only* reason modern dynamic languages can “fly so close to the sun” is because they have a safety-net when they over optimize.

/r/rust's new policy about project announcements (more specifically, "code dumps") is perhaps an unfortunate necessity in the new era - www.reddit.com/r/rust/comme.... It used to be nice to congratulate new Rustaceans on the work they had put into a project and celebrate their learning but...

I am phasing out support for the custom `.rten` model format in RTen. It was designed as an alternative to ONNX that was more efficient to load as weights are appropriately aligned to enable using them from a memory-mapped model. However ONNX external data is a good-enough standardized solution.

Version 0.25 of the RTen ONNX runtime has been released. This includes support for several widely-used non-standard "contrib" ops, attention-related operators and bug fixes/compatibility improvements found by AI-assisted testing of over a thousand ONNX models from Hugging Face.

Agents are very useful for large-scale verification of a new implementation of something against existing real-world data. I used Claude to pull hundreds of ONNX models from Hugging Face and run them against RTen. This has found panics, spec edge cases and helped prioritize unimplemented features.

Of all the manual or micro-managing corrections I find myself needing to make to Claude-generated code nowadays, the vast majority are to docstrings, comments and commit messages. On the surface this seems like a superficial issue, just a quirk that it tends to be verbose.

Hmm... on the one hand it is very useful to have an easy API to perform nuanced tasks that require language and image understanding. On the other, this is indeed a major backwards compatibility and interoperability hazard.

We are THRILLED to announce that our Ecma standards will now use UUIDs instead of integers. ECMA-262 is now ECMA-39c506d7-731f-4220-8ffd-a68970945a65. Far more scalable. No two specs will ever collide again. Perfect system. Shortened forms like ECMA-39c506d7 are acceptable in casual conversation.
