My experience is from the microfilm projects I managed for the NC Division of Archives and History and the Library of Congress. The work was funded by public and private sources. MF is almost immortal. It can be loaned, copied and scanned.

Yes, it's called microfilm. Almost future-proof. All you need are mirrors, a lens and a light source. Digital archives are for public access now. Who can know if future tech will be able to open an ancient PDF.

Have you done historical research? Scanned archives will be useless without the historical computer equipment. Unless you're preserving old hardware in museum conditions, nothing scanned now can be used in 50 or 100 years from now.
