We voted. California is so easy. Mail ballots arrived at our house yesterday. Today we filled them out and walked to the ballot drop box at the neighborhood library. On election night we’ll be flying back from Santiago, Chile. May we land to news of the biggest baddest blue tsunami ever.

Probably not. I remember a similarly breathless Time Magazine cover article from 1966 that asked "Is God Dead?" (If only.) I expect The Atlantic will be just as wrong about the so-called demise of reading. There have always been people who read a lot, and people who read nothing.

This is a picture of my very nervous mother playing golf in the Cameron Highlands in early April 1967 a week or so after Jim Thompson disappeared. We knew him socially from Bangkok. One early rumor was a tiger killed him so for weeks everyone was afraid to be outside.

I was at this match last night and your article captured atmosphere well. The Iranian diaspora cheered Team Melli's goals wildly but jeered the anthem. A few attended with express purpose of protesting, but most fans were able to toggle back and forth between loving country and opposing IR gov't.

Behold my 3rd grade class picture from Tehran American school. We lived in Iran in 1960s — my father built the (recently bombed) oil facilities on Kharg Island in the Gulf. Anyone who lives in Iran falls in love with its awesome people, and I wish them deliverance from their long nightmare.

Common containers aren't a panacea either. This is Lisbon. When the bins get full people leave garbage on the ground, even thought the bins are marked "Don't Leave Trash on the Ground!" Neighborhoods need right number, right capacity and frequent pick-up schedule for shared bins to work.
