Speaking just for myself here, if expense were not a factor – like if I just struck the lottery – my wife and I would go have like 3 kids right away.

It’d be nigh impossible now to take the life choices women have away from them (nor should we even want to!). The only other lever to pull then is the affordability factor.

Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 21/04/2025
Another factor that ranks super high was the paucity of choices women had on how they would lead their lives. When supporting themselves with a career was out of the reach of most women many opted into motherhood earlier.

If you look at post-war baby boom you see a society that in many ways (good and bad) made it natural and easy to start families younger, the most glaring of which is just how much more affordable a decent middle class existence was.

I’ve used Cursor as my editor for two weeks and wow! I’m not exaggerating when I say that this has changed my productivity so powerfully I don’t think I can ever look back. Vibe programming, Chat oriented programming, whatever you call it is obviously how all coding will be done in the future.

An attempt to increase the birth rate that doesn’t seek to address factors like the cost of living, housing and education is bound to fail in the long term. Those are powerful and long enduring disincentives.

Trump Aides Solicit Ideas to Raise Birthrate, From Baby Bonuses to Fertility Planning
The White House is soliciting policy proposals designed to give women incentives to have more children, a priority for many social conservatives.

These problems are closely correlated though. Male isolation and disconnection is upstream of males coping with by developing the grandiose victim mentality of the incel.

Trans-women competing against cis-women is a cultural issue. Not medical. And it’s a losing issue for the party that decides to die on that hill because most Americans do not want that. I wish we lived in a more emphatic world, but it is what it is.

Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 06/03/2025
They did that because attaching Democrats to unpopular policies like trans-women competing against cis-women is wildly unpopular and it helps them win elections. Democrats losing elections just hurts trans people more, they care a little at least. Republican’s DGAF.

Politicians run the gov’t not doctors and politicians have to take a position on issues. Get your advice from wherever you want but you are going to get policy from gov’t officials regardless.

I think their story is that Apple Intelligence is or will have unique functionality because of the integration it has within the ecosystem and the amount of context it has from the Apple ecosystem. That said I hope they make a proper app with a chat interface for Siri on top of OS-wide features.

I don’t like it. I get the arguments for it but it still hits my wallet. Also the MTA is not a very effective organization. I’d like to know exactly what improvements this is buying because all I’ve heard so far has been vague and hand wavy. Not convincing.

It’s messed up that I don’t want to own a SUV or pickup as my primary vehicle, but when I’m surrounded by them on the road in a full sized sedan I feel unsafe and compelled to get a truck just to match their size in the case I actually get into an accident with one.
000
Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 03/01/2025
These things are already killing us; traffic accidents involving massive trucks are deadlier, especially when matched against a sedan. This attack just highlights how easy these things are to turn into weapons deadly enough to rival an AR15.
000
Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 03/01/2025
Just learned that the Bourbon Street attack was done with a pickup truck, which makes twisted sense when you think about how unnecessarily bigger heavier and deadlier those vehicles have gotten in the past 30 years. It’s absurd.

This is the plan for now. I might change my mind though. Part of me wants to forgo the Pi’s and run a beefier dev server and forgo the “learning about cluster computing” thing. And another part of me wants to build a beefier dev server from an old MOBO, but it’s full ATX and I want something small.
000
Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 23/12/2024
I still want a dev server but instead of doing it with a Pi I’m thinking some kind of N100 mini-PC. They cost only slightly more than a Pi 5 with better performance, with expandable RAM and storage, and it should run Linux just as well on x86.

Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 23/12/2024
Raspberry Pis aren’t the best choice of hardware for this project but I already have them so might as well put them in a cluster and run self-hosted apps on them. My vision right now is 4x Pi 4’s in a cluster running non-critical stuff like home assistant, pi hole, homebridge, etc.

Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 23/12/2024
After going down a rabbit hole of what to do with my Raspberry Pi’s and I’ve decided I want to build a Home Lab. How’d I get here? Well I want to run a bunch of self-hosted apps and learn in a small-scale way the same concepts and skills used to run production apps in real data-centers.

Nice! My biggest concern was/is critical tools that I use not working on non-x86 architecture. Good to know that hasn’t been a major headache for you.

Same, I’ve had more ideas than complete projects by far. I’ve learned through experience I prefer software projects. Hardware ones like arcade consoles I eventually don’t use and take apart.

Probably the same, 6-7. They feel obsolete for my use-cases now. I used to run self-hosted stuff like homebridge and pi-hole but running those containerized on a dedicated server now so far has been a much nicer developer experience.

What should I do with my embarrassingly large hoard of raspberry pi’s now?

Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 18/12/2024
I spent the weekend figuring out how to move a bunch of self-hosted apps on Raspberry Pi’s to running in containers on my home server. Worked out great! Wish I would have done this sooner, learning a lot about containers along the way.

This tired and busted take again… 🙄 If this place stays left leaning, so be it. People don’t want to hang out in the same spaces as their trolls and haters. They can have their freedom of speech, and we can have our freedom of association to leave spaces that are hostile to us.

A troll's experience of blue sky once they master-blocked should basically be like a shadow ban where all of their kind is siloed away together into their own echo chamber, away from good-faith, well-intentioned users. Give them a few strikes and after that, into the trashcan they go.

Robert Blakey @robertblakey.com · 22/11/2024
Of course, the trolls, bigots, and spammers will come if this Bluesky is successful. That's why l'm happy moderation lists are a thing here. I'd like to see an algorithmic, continuously updated master block list that crawls the platform for hateful, bad-faith users that we can all subscribe to.

It’s the paradox of tolerance Mark, Twitter became a cesspool because it tolerated the trolls and bigots until they dominated the platform. That’s the worst that could happen. Why risk that? To say we’re tolerant? Whatever can be done to minimize and marginalize bad-faith users, great. Let’s do it.
