Most people instinctively think that you should build a product first then go see if it sells second. You will spend a lifetime making unsellable things of you do it this way.

You don't have to learn to code to make software anymore, but developing a systems understanding will make it 10x cheaper, faster and easier to do it.

What is distribution? It's things like @mcuban.bsky.social has 1.4m followers here on bsky and just puts the domain of his business on his profile and how many people see it? So how do you get distribution when you don't have the followers?

Do you ever walk around and look at all of these businesses everywhere, wondering who owns them and how they got to do that?

120

The business starter kit @robbuildsbusiness.bsky.social · 13/07/2026

I have talked to many people in the past who have business or product ideas but they are very protective over them, as in, they fear someone hearing it and stealing it. So far, even years later, none of these people have made a successful business out of any of these secret ideas.

How do you actually know if your idea is a good idea?

My kids take inspiration from the businesses I've started in the past but they often miss a critical element. I always tell them don't make the product until you have proof that there is a market for it. They don't listen, so I am surrounded by unsold products...

Let's briefly talk about product market fit (PMF). PMF is how your product has real, measurable value for a specific market segment. Notice the measurable value, which is not theoretical and how that applies to a market segment, not just "everyone". Focusing on this is a major key to success.

I spent the last month working cold sales of a new product and finally decided today that I'm getting the signal I was hoping for that it's got pmf or desire. It's a great product but this is when it's time to repackage the offer and find a better fit.

The new offering: "Jomo - boosting local businesses" * Get Found * Get Remembered * Get Ahead Jomo has a robust feature set which works to help more customers find your business and keep those customers coming back again and again. What do you think?

010

The business starter kit @robbuildsbusiness.bsky.social · 09/07/2026

My goal is to help local businesses, so I created a (in my opinion) really good customer reactivation system - but I'm finding this doesn't fit well because most businesses that want help don't have the loyal customers to reactivate... I need a better package offering to help with that.

020

The business starter kit @robbuildsbusiness.bsky.social · 09/07/2026

When creating a brand new type of product, it's super hard to tell if the cold response is a lack of PMF or just new product type pushback. I'm thinking I need an A/B so I have something to compare to

I met a retired business owner who has had several successes over about 50 years and he told me this was his secret: identify the biggest bottleneck and focus on solving it. Then repeat. The bottleneck can be anything. It can be sales, fulfillment, employees, etc. it sounds simple but he is right.

The brutal truth is that unless you have customers, you have nothing. Ideas are worth nothing. Built products are worth nothing. Only customers create value in a business. The real business is in getting customers.

Google pay works so well, it is a solid model for a one-click portable customer-info-and-payment system. I think there could be legitimate competition to amazon if every online retailer used this and someone ran a live index (more live than google shop) of all the online retailers.

I thought that many people would be excited about the idea of being able to make apps and games using ai, specifically because it lets people that didn't become coding experts create things, but it seems it's not having that much impact like that.
