Not for healthcare. Not for schools. Not for rural hospitals or affordable housing. For cages. For contracts with private prison companies. For more fear, not more freedom. Arkansas families are losing food assistance, tax credits, and Medicaid—while billionaires and prison contractors cash in.

$45 Billion. That’s how much the One Big Beautiful Bill sets aside for new immigrant detention centers—including for families and children.

Budgets should reflect compassion, justice, and freedom — not cruelty. Let’s take back the moral ground. Let’s build something better — together.

That’s why I’m running for Congress. Because your voice deserves to be heard. Because your values deserve to be represented. Because our community deserves better.

This isn’t just bad policy. It’s a moral failure. It betrays our belief in one another. It punishes those who hold our communities together. And it chips away at our freedom to live and thrive.

If you’re a working Arkansan, this bill is a gut punch. — Teachers: fewer classroom resources — Farmers: squeezed by corporate handouts — Seniors: threatened healthcare & income — Immigrants: more fear — Parents: more stress, less support

Here’s what the bill really does: — Giant tax breaks for billionaires — Cuts to childcare, education, student loans — Less food assistance — More detention centers — Threats to Medicare & Social Security And higher costs for the rest of us.

Budgets are moral documents. They show what — and who — we value. This bill? It slashes support for families while handing billions to the ultra-wealthy. There’s nothing beautiful about it.

The One Big Beautiful Bill was just signed into law. They say it’s sweeping, bold, visionary. They’re right — but not in the way they want you to think. Here’s what’s actually inside — and why it’s a betrayal of working families. 🧵

They need to emphasize the shared values of most Americans: “We believe in responsibility, accountability, and fairness - let’s cut real waste, not essential services.”
031
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
They need to speak with moral conviction: “We’re fighting for a government that respects hard work, spends wisely, and protects the people who need it most.”
111
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
The bottom line is that Democrats need to meet people where they are. They need to be hammering home a core message: “Taxpayers deserve better than political gimmicks. We need smart, efficient, and fair government - not handouts to the rich disguised as ‘cuts.’”
100
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
Here’s what they can say. “You don’t want ‘big’ or ‘small’ government. You want a government that works.” “Instead of slashing what helps working families, let’s make government work smarter—cut the waste, keep the programs that serve people, and crack down on real fraud.”
100
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
Third, Dems need to go on the offensive, offering a positive alternative: smarter, not smaller, government. Since Reagan, Republicans have convinced Americans that government is the problem. Democrats should be telling a better story, “Good government does what you need - no more, no less.”
110
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
“They’re not cutting government for Wall Street or the well-connected - they’re cutting services that regular people depend on.” “They call it ‘trimming the fat.’ That ‘fat’ is the nurse treating your child or the inspector making sure your water is safe to drink.”
100
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
Tell stories of real people and real consequences. “They call it ‘cutting waste.’ What does that mean for you? Longer wait times at the VA. Fewer teachers for your kids. Higher costs for your medication.”
110
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
Second, Democrats must make the stakes personal, focusing on what “cuts” actually cost. Republicans claim, “We’re cutting bureaucracy and fraud.” Democrats need to insist, “Their cuts don’t hurt Washington insiders. They hurt you, your family, and your community.”
110
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
Examples: “You work hard, and you deserve a government that works just as hard for you.” “Real fiscal responsibility isn’t about cutting for the sake of cutting—it’s about making sure your tax dollars go where they actually help people, not where they disappear into corporate loopholes.”
110
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
When Republicans say, “We’re cutting waste and fraud,” Democrats need to respond with moral clarity, “We’re making sure your tax dollars are invested wisely - keeping what works, fixing what’s broken, and cutting what actually wastes money.”
100
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
Here’s how: First, Democrats need to reclaim “fiscal responsibility” as a moral obligation.
100
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
As usual, Dems continue to lose the messaging war. To counter the Reps “waste and fraud” narrative, Dems need a values-based approach that reframes the debate on efficiency, fairness, and responsibility - core values that resonate with voters who are more receptive to Republican messaging.

Elon Musk and his teenage programmers at DOGE have dominated the headlines over the past few weeks. They have bragged about all of the waste and fraud they have uncovered within the federal bureaucracy. And, according to polls, more Americans approve than disapprove of what they are doing.

DOGE is killing Democrats on messaging. 👇

If you’re in power and you’re just saying “We don’t have the votes”—what do you expect voters to do? Stay home? Lose hope? You don’t win by being a bystanding naysayer. The hero wins with the help of a trusted guide. Democratic leaders: Be a trusted guide. Or be quiet. /🧵

Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 17/02/2025
If you’re in Congress, your job isn’t just to describe the problem. It’s to inspire action. > Tell voters what they can do. > Show them a path forward. > Help them believe they can win. /8

Imagine if Yoda just sat Luke down and said, “Yeah, the Empire is too strong. Nothing we can do. Let’s watch and wait and hope they fail.” That’s exactly how Democratic messaging feels right now. /7

Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 17/02/2025
The American people are the hero of this story. But too many Democrats are playing the wrong role. They’re acting like C-3PO—endlessly telling us how bad the odds are. They should be Obi-Wan—showing us how to fight. /6

Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 17/02/2025
The hero doesn’t need to hear the naysayers. The hero needs to hear a trusted guide who gives them a plan and calls them to action.  The hero wins because someone steps in to guide them. Luke Skywalker → Yoda Frodo → Gandalf Harry Potter → Dumbledore Daniel → Mr. Miyagi /5

Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 17/02/2025
Right now, too many Dem leaders are positioning themselves as a different character in the story - the naysayers. Every story has them: C-3PO, the townspeople in Jaws, Professor Fudge, Randall in Monsters, Inc.  /4
111
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 17/02/2025
All too often, Democrats position themselves as the hero of the story. (Remember “I’m with her.” But that’s a completely different thread.) /3
111
Robb Ryerse @robbryerse.bsky.social · 17/02/2025
In every great story, the hero faces impossible odds. The Empire is stronger. The Ring is heavy. The opponent is bigger, faster, more powerful. The hero doesn’t need to be convinced that the odds are long. /2

Watch most of the Democratic Congresspeople on TV this weekend, and you’ll hear the same thing: “Republicans control everything.” “We don’t have the votes.” “There’s nothing we can do.” They’re telling the truth. But they’re failing at storytelling. /1

This election cycle didn't go how I wanted in many ways. I have much I'm grieving. But also much to be grateful for. Top of that list is the chance to work side-by-side with my fearless, creative friends Doug Pagitt @jonesforar.bsky.social. It is a profound honor to be on their teams.

Trump has flooded the zone with batshit nominees. Gaetz going down is great. But there are so many others to stop. Senate Republicans don't have the balls to do what is right, I'm sure.

On Saturday, I was in a gas station in Fayetteville. A group of middle aged white men were in line in front of me. One loudly and sarcastically said to another, “I'm homo for you.” They all laughed. And then one said, “We’re allowed to say that kind of stuff again.” And that's where we are.

I'm still recovering from the whiplash of the election. One day, I was having conversations about how our team created and distributed the most viral ad of the whole cycle. The next, I was watching TFG win again. It all - all of it - still feels so unbelievable.
