Tomorrow's NASA's Astronomy Picture Of the Day (APOD): colliding spiral galaxies by JWSTand Hubble. 🔭 🧪

Two spiral galaxies take up almost the entire view and appear to be overlapping. The galaxy at left, IC 2163, is smaller and more compact than the galaxy at right, NGC 2207. The black background of space is dotted with foreground stars and extremely distant galaxies.

NGC 6240. This is a nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) that was discovered 152 years ago. This new JWST was released in a recent article. arxiv.org/abs/2412.147... 🔭 🧪

False-colour images of NGC 6240 produced combining the MIRI images obtained with the filters F560W and F1130W, within an approximate FoV of 90′′×90′′(1′′=526 pc).

You know if it weren't for the bitter cold, wind, snow & ice and lack of sunshine. Winter wouldn't be so bad.

Clean, high-resolution image of the deep universe from the previous post. 🔭 🧪

$Hundreds of galaxies appear in this view, which is set against the black background of space. There are many overlapping objects at various distances. They include large, blue foreground stars, some with eight diffraction spikes, and white and pink spiral and elliptical galaxies. Numerous tiny orange dots appear throughout the scene.$

Stephan's Quintet (NIRCam image). Processed by Eric Emmons. www.astrobin.com/dm3nn1/ 🔭 🧪

This image shows Stephan's Quintet, a visual grouping of five galaxies located about 290 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. Four of the galaxies (NGC 7317, NGC 7318A, NGC 7318B, and NGC 7319) form a compact group and are interacting with each other. The fifth galaxy, NGC 7320, is much closer to Earth and is not part of the interacting group. The image was captured by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope.
