It's the combination of lots of people and lots of isolated stretches of land where you can effectively isolate them. Same reason all of the USA's cults are out west. Something about being able to isolate your subjects from everyday life seems to accelerate cult formation.

It isn't quite the end of heliocentrism, but its evidence contrary to a widely believed thing about the world and our place in it you know? I don't know where it goes from here. But I do think arguing that it will change nothing is at least provocative as saying it changes everything? Stuffs in flux

That humans alone have the capacity to reason is not a necessary component of many philosophical schools or traditions but is an implicit premise in most of them. Maybe acknowledging other forms of existence with the capacity to reason ends up not much affecting human self perspective, but like...

I don't think we seriously expected AI to actually be a genuine software phenomenon, not really. We weren't thinking of something that had thousands, potentially millions of discreet instances just like 'normal' software. Everyone seems to have expected it to be more complicated, more profound.

It might just be me not having many clear memories of the 'Normal Times' but I don't feel like society getting caught flatfooted by everything is that surprising? Very few people seem to have actually expected serious AI to arrive, and as you said, people were expecting something very different.

The Anthropic method is only viable so long as Anthropic, or an ideologically similar organization hold a decisive edge is risky capabilities. Which has literally never been true at any point in time, and it's unclear if anyone ever had a plan to make it true.

I'm pretty sure this is literally just the motors having outpaced the feet. The humanoid robots didn't need as much traction a year ago as they'll need going forward, and solutions needed enough effort designers decided to put it off until it's relevant. Probably next year.
