Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders (1988) The third (and last) adventure game Lucasfilm Games released on the Commodore 64. Earth is under threat from aliens, who are using a mind bending machine to make us dumb enough that we can be easily conquered, and you have to thwart their plans. 1/4

Robo City (1984) A text adventure featuring cute PETSCII-based graphics. You have to save Princess Andromeda from a bunch of robots, and need to explore their surprisingly human-like city to find her. The puzzles are nothing special (not terrible either), but the game is kind of charming. 1/2

Graphics BASIC (1983) A double feature today, as one didn't really work without the other. We see a programming example from Graphics BASIC by Ron Gilbert and Tom McFarlane. The tiny listing and the image it produces. If you've ever tried to do graphics in standard BASIC, this'll blow your mind.

Gumshoe (1984) This is a simple action game that sees you trying to save some rich guy's daughter from a bunch of Mario-looking bad guys. This involves getting to the top of a highrise most likely designed by a raving mad architect, using escalators and elevators. 1/3

Impossible Mission (1984) Another screenshot from Dennis Caswell's classic roguelite platform puzzler, Impossible Mission. If you know the Commodore 64, you know this game - and if you don't, it's one of the system's must play titles. It's very difficult, but also very enjoyable.

Exile (1991) An ambitious and impressive action-adventure where you explore a vast cave system on a foreign planet. It's a bit like what we'd today call a Metroidvania, where you gradually get new tools that allows you to explore further, but with extra puzzle solving. 1/4

Blinky's Scary School (1990) Here's a very nice looking budget platformer from Zeppelin Games. You play as Blinky, a ghost in training who needs to explore the castle of Hamish McTavish (presumably in Scotland) and find a way to scare him before dawn. Otherwise it's back to the underworld for you!

Xerons (1984) This might not look like much, but it's a good clone of Namco's arcade game Galaxian. It plays well and runs well. The graphics are simple, but clear and crisp, and there's a lot going on on screen without any sluggishness (unlike Atarisoft's official Galaxian for the C64).

Last Ninja 3 (1991) This is the third and last game in the Last Ninja series, which was one of the most popular "home-grown" series of games on the Commodore 64. It's an isometric action adventure set in Japan, with great graphics and music, and lots of screens to explore. 1/3

Action Biker (1985) This is a fun little budget motorbike game where you ride your bike around a small but feature-packed game world in search of upgrades. There are 40 of them, and while most of them don't actually do anything, some add new gameplay-features such as a low gear et.c. 1/3

Kickman (1982) Kickman is an official conversion of the arcade game Kick (or Kick-Man) by Bally Midway. You control a clown on a unicycle (obviously), and need to catch falling balloons on your head. If you fail to catch a balloon, you can try and kick it back into the air (hence the name). (1/3)

Miami Vice (1986) Miami Vice is a very fascinating precursor to the modern open world genre, and in particular the early GTA games. You explore the game's version of Miami in your car, where the game uses a top-down viewpoint, and can enter and search building as seen in the screenshot. 1/4

Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness (1986) Ultima I was first released on the Apple II in 1981. In 1986, Origin released a remake of the game, rewritten in assembler (the original was mostly created in BASIC), for the Apple II and Commodore 64, with a DOS-version following in 1987. 1/3

Speedball (1989) This futuristic sports game was a big hit on the Amiga and Atari ST in 1988, and was promptly ported to other platforms, such as the Commodore 64. While this version might not be quite as good as the 16-bit original, it has all the same features and is great fun. 1/3

Mysterious Mountain (1986) A very simple platformer of the single-screen variety. Avoid enemies and long drops, and grab all the keys to complete each level. The game doesn't look (or play) like a 1986 release, but I think it was only available in a multi-game collection called Arcadepack. 1/2

International Soccer (1983) International Soccer was an early hit on the Commodore 64, and thanks to the side-on view, large player sprites and ball that actually bounced, it was basically the most authentic looking football game around back in 1983. It even had a black & white mode for old TVs.1/3

The Sentinel (1986) A truly unique puzzle/action game that might feel complicated and confusing at first, but is actually reasonably easy to learn once you get past the initial hurdles. The game takes place in a three-dimensional landscape guarded by a sentinel, usually at the highest point. 1/5

Who Dares Wins (1985) This is a very good clone of Capcom's arcade game Commando, a run-and-gun shoot-’em-up with vertical scrolling. Who Dares Wins is actually such a good clone that Elite, who had the rights to port Commando to 8-bit computers, managed to pull WDW from the market. 1/4

Stix (1983) Stix may look simple, but it is really addictive and fun. It's a clone of Taito's arcade game Qix (which got an official Commodore 64-version later on), but I actually prefer it to the original. Though that could simply be because I tried Stix before playing Qix. 1/3
