I mean, was Life of a Showgirl really that bad or was it just Swift's time to get "taken down a peg or two"?

Everything is cyclical. Plus it's easy to get mad at a writer who has a recognizable cadence because then you can all pretend you can do it too.

Let's just put a bullet in the head of sharksploitation, once and for all. The last statement on the issue is Dangerous Animals, which shows that all the myths about sharks stalking us are human constructs, and that we are the real menace here.

I have now received two separate interview invites insisting that "detailed questions are submitted in advance." Because we're seeing such a shift with tenured people losing positions and green writers getting brought in at content farms, let me be clear: that is not how journalism works.

As she put it, they told her, "The accountants will look to see if the accounting processes have been followed. You don't care about that. You care if the numbers make sense."

This isn't just journalism. A friend of mine worked as a forensic accountant. She was hired for the job from her physics postdoc studying magnetic fields. Not just hired. Headhunted. Why? Because she could find things the trained accountants couldn't.

They're trained to respond to instantaneous gamechangers that cannot be expected, and to give a feel of the on-the-ground situation. As the story is changing at scale, that's what you need. Not the reporter who knows how to handle a FOIA request. The one who knows how to follow a fly ball.

Case in point. An old news desk editor, an all-timer, told me the best reporters to have on the ground in a major catastrophe like a flood aren't news desk folks. It's the sports desk.

When you're breaking expertise, what you're doing is coming in with fresh eyes and saying, "What even is this?" You look at a thing and you don't say, "This is normal," or, "this is how we've always done it." You ask, "Why does everyone think this is OK?" You respond with your own skills.

Now, beat reporters are the best. They know a scene inside out, they can tell you when things are moving, they know the players. They're indispensible. But they can also have blind spots, related to proximity and perspective.

Richard Whittaker @rmwhittaker.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Two, having someone who can do what I call breaking expertise is very, very important. This is when you have someone with a rock solid skill set come in and completely end run the beat reporters in that field.

First, Jeff Horwitz was a reporter who worked the capitol beat, and his specialty was examining decision-making processes, as in who was pushing what levers and why. That's how he uncovered Manafort pushing Russian interests. So that's just accurate.

I've seen some criticisms of The Social Reckoning saying "it doesn't make any sense that the WSJ would use a capitol reporter to cover Facebook." Lemme explain why you're not just factually wrong, but an important lesson about breaking expertise.

I felt like I was on an island when everyone was raving about No Time to Die, which is a real contender for the worst Bond movie ever. Craig was a great Bond, but with only two out of five watchable movies.

I crossed paths with Paxton back when I was a legislative reporter and he was a state rep, and I can honestly say that I have never met another elected official so lacking in any basic decency or likability. Every other Republican I ever talked to loathed him, and that's his own party.
