Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 14/10/2026In Québécois, Ostia is used in the same situations as in Castellano. I may have missed it but what Spanish novel are you reading? 000 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 19/07/2026My wife is Spanish and so we were obviously cheering for Spain. In addition, I detest Javier Milei and would have hated to see him share in the glory of an Argentine win. Every time I see him , I see Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men. 030 0

Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 11/06/2026Robertson Davies told a story about the excellent Canadian writer, Margaret Lawrence. She was at a cocktail party talking with an eminent neurosurgeon who said that when he retired he was going to start writing novels. She replied that when she retired she was going to start doing brain surgery. 000 0

Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 10/04/2026They were “interviewed” on Tout le Monde en Parle (Societé Radio Canada!). Bizarre but amusing and worth a watch. I checked and it is available on YouTube. 000 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 01/04/2026In French, I would recommend John L’Enfer by Didier Decoin. I believe it won the Prix Goncourt back in the 1970s. It is the story of a Cheyenne who comes to New York to wash windows of the skyscrapers. He sees that the buildings are deteriorating which no one else sees or admits. 000 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 01/04/2026A novel in Spanish that I think would meet your criteria is Patria by Fernando Aramburu, although I had to confirm that the original was written in Castellano and not in Basque. 000 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 01/04/2026And I am going to look for La Invención de Morel on your recommendation. 101 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 31/03/2026I haven’t read the novel but I did see the film with Fabrice Luchini. Amusing but probably not as good as the book. 100 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 26/03/2026Fortunately, like the passé simple, the passé du subjonctif is never used in everyday French. 000 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 16/03/2026Last night on French television there was a report on French influencers who moved to Dubai to avoid paying French taxes and are now begging the French government to repatriate them. 062 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 12/03/2026There was an article in La Vanguardia this week entitled “Sanchez ¿Nobel de la Paz?” The actual article didn’t go quite that far but I would have loved to see Trump’s reaction if he came across it given his rants against Spain and Sanchez. 000 0

Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 12/12/2025I saw In Bruges first in English and later in French. It was funny in French but much funnier in English. Great dialogue and irony don’t necessarily translate well. 010 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 03/10/2025Thanks I will certainly read it. Have you read the series of novels by Almudena Grandes Episodios de una Guerra Interminable? I read them all and found them to be excellent. 110 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 03/10/2025I find with Perez-Reverte you never know what you are going to get. I found that Línea de Fuego and El Tango de la Guardia Vieja were good, whereas El Asedio was a bit ridiculous and over 700 pages. Nevertheless, I will be looking forward to reading El Problema Final 100 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 05/08/2025We watched the movie Monsieur Aznavour this weekend. Worth a watch if haven’t seen it already. 100 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 27/06/2025If you are talking Beethoven opus 130/133 I am definitely B-flat major. Opus 133 is 19th century heavy metal. I also have a fancy for Nokia ringtones. 000 0
Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 02/06/2025I suppose that it is some consolation that it was God who was responsible for the elimination of the Winnipeg Jets and not the Dallas Stars. 000 0

Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 09/01/2025I live in Montreal but was born in Winnipeg and have supported the Jets since they were in the WHA. During the 15 years they didn’t exist I cheered for the Senators. 020 0

Ross Milne @rmilne.bsky.social · 17/11/2024I still drink and enjoy American IPAs but I now prefer those that use primarily hops such as Centennial, Cascade, Chinook rather than those that use enormous amounts of Citra, Amarillo, Mosaic etc. 010 0
