Sally Bowles was based on a Scottish cabaret singer called Jean Ross was an ambulance driver during the Spanish civil war and then lived in the south of England. Ross hated the character and said it was nothing like her but very like one of Isherwood’s boyfriends at the time. But Wilkommen anyway
