I'm not judging one bit in asking this, just sincerely curious: why do pickles need to glitter? And why just glitter for pickles (versus, say, more generic 'food glitter' for decorating/elevating various foods)? The market for such edible glitter has to be bigger than just for pickles, no?

Was shocked to see Prop 38's total (even just the UCLA-tied Inst.'s likely take) compared next to the lower amt in March 2028's Prop to fund a far bigger range of issues & researchers throughout the state. To think how that $50M+ on the campaign cld've been a nice endowment donation vs. this BS.

Apologies. I should've just reposted your terrific article from back in July: Prop 38 "is written in a way that very likely excludes all but 1 institute in the entire state: the CA Institute for Immunology & Immunotherapy, whose prominent donor & co-founder is the chief backer of the proposition."

Proposition 38 will award $4 billion to one unnamed research center. Under the very specific criteria, only one center seemingly qualifies.

Such needless tree waste. And of course, they don't talk abt what the Prop actually is--only why it's great/terrible. Was reading one of several today bf I threw them all out & had to laugh at how I had no idea what the Prop was abt & had to figure it out by reading the flyer's criticisms.

(cont'd) Considering the huge impacts NIH & NSF $ cuts have had on sci innovation, scientists throughout CA univ's & research institutes, to see one Inst. push for this amt of $ (& protectionism) from taxpayers is shameful imo. Even worse when considering limited transparency this will entail.

Yeah, I think I'm now at the point where it would have to be such a particular situation to go for it vs. most other menu items. Probably not helping is that I will try almost anything, so it always has stiff competition from other options when I'm perusing a menu & listening intently wrt specials.
120 2
Richard M. Carpiano, PhD, MPH @rmcarpiano.medsky.social · 17/10/2026
IMO, crab is not too far behind lobster in terms of all the issues I raised in my OP. Thus in cost-benefit terms (price, consumption ease, taste, etc.), when it comes to an ingredient in a dish (paella, pasta dish a la frutti di mare), I'll take shrimp, scallops, even crawfish any day over lobster.

Fair. That's about the only lobster dish that grabs my eyes on a menu. But Surf & Turf? BFD--just 86 the lobster tail and give me shrimp instead. Added to paella? Meh. It just creates an obstacle in the middle of the platter to eat around for the better (tasty) stuff.

Fleming's to open in Downtown Riverside & become 3rd steak place in a 4 block area. Mission Inn Steakhouse & Dapper likely not too happy. Putting aside my pref for an Ethiopian, Spanish, or German place opening instead, this critical mass (& I presume demand) is interesting considering beef prices.

100% on the former, but waaaay too expensive to serve as a delivery device or protein source. Not one of those types that is huge on protein, but I'd just happily opt for shrimp or scallops--or even a steak--instead.
240 4
Richard M. Carpiano, PhD, MPH @rmcarpiano.medsky.social · 17/10/2026
Crab is another one: never wowed me so I never got the hype. I like crab cakes, but your comment abt necessary lemon & Old Bay got me wondering what crab really adds to those beyond texture & protein. Also, crab & lobster req a bib: I'm both way too old & way not old enough for such an eating aid.
130 3
Richard M. Carpiano, PhD, MPH @rmcarpiano.medsky.social · 17/10/2026
Once saw a critic refer to it as simply "a butter delivery device." That's not a wrong take, but for such a purpose, I'd happily just sub the lobster for some decent fresh bread.
010 1
Richard M. Carpiano, PhD, MPH @rmcarpiano.medsky.social · 17/10/2026
Ok, it's a Friday, so I'm casting out a provocative statement: After years of uncritically eating lobster, I now have to call it: it is a hugely over-rated menu item--whether served as a main course or part of some dish (e.g., paella). So overpriced for what it is. Glorified, pricey texture food.
