There was a time when a reasonable person could believe the 'clean Wehrmacht' myth, but that ended decades ago. Far from being immune to it, the Army was actually the source of the antisemitism that spread through Germany in the 1920s.

Yes, that's exactly the 'lesser evil' strategy that got us here. Voting for the lessor evil gets you more lessers and more evil.

Tweet from January 7th, 2021. "The Beer Hall Putsch was a pathetic, comic-opera uprising that had no chance of succeeding. But 10 years later the Nazis ruled Germany."

sort of egalitarian structure. They're top down. The whole point of the system is to make sure that only abusers and sociopaths make it through. Anyone with empathy will probably be filtered out. It's all the Epstein Class, and fraternities are one of the ways in.

are all part of the filtering process, to make sure that only the 'right' sort of people bubble up to the top. It's not, as some have said, a matter of participating in criminal activity together so everyone 'has something' on everyone else and can trust each other. US elites don't work on that /

I'm sure I'm not the first person to come to this conclusion about fraternities, but I haven't seen anyone yet make the point so I'll do it. Fraternities are one of the gateways to elite status in the US, and they're the way they are for a reason. The sadomasochistic initiations and gang rapes /

I remember seeing a thread somewhere from a public defender who had noticed that almost all of the total BS arrests she had to deal with came at the end of the cop's shift. Grab someone at the end of your shift, get 2-3 hours of easy overtime filling out paperwork.

No, what got us here is fascist collaborators pushing the lessor evil. "Come on, it's just a little evil. It's only going to hurt people I don't care about and it'll attract some conservative voters. It never has before, but it might this time." Fucking fascist.

It's easy to forget how astonishingly little the average American knows about history. About 5 out of 6 teenagers I've asked, "When did Columbus discover America?" Answered, "Uh...177...6?" One girl tried using being British as an excuse, but she couldn't place the Battle of Hastings either.

You might be surprised how many people think the national anthem refers to the Revolution. It's surprisingly free of context.

Hmm. I think we covered it when I was in high school, but that was a long time ago. It was fairly recent history back then.

I don't know how many kids today have heard the song, but I would bet that to the extent the war remains in the public consciousness at all, it's because of the song. Which says '1814' right in the first line. If Marvel dropped it onto a movie soundtrack suddenly everyone would know about it....

If the average American knows anything at all about the War of 1812, it's the Battle of New Orleans, because of the song.

de Torqueville.
I do not assert that the ostensible end, or even that the secret aim, of American parties is to promote the rule of aristocracy or democracy in the country; but I affirm that aristocratic or democratic passions may easily be detected at the bottom of all parties, and that, although they escape a superficial observation, they are the main point and the very soul of every faction in the United States. But beneath this artificial enthusiasm, and these obsequious attentions to the preponderating power, it is easy to perceive that the wealthy members of the community entertain a hearty distaste to the democratic institutions of their country.

I thought this usage was interesting, back when I found it in my great aunt's house back in '77. It was published in 1918, before the end of the war. I've since come to believe that there's only been 1 world war. WWI was just the last in a long series of wars between European colonial empires.

But who puts that much of their self-worth into a hobby or fandom. Especially a MUSICIAN. What logic brings someone to think that the manliness of Tom Petty fandom is threatened by women? I certainly believe Nicole, this shit happens. But I'm damned if I can understand it.

to go astray when you get into fandoms and hobbies. There's no money on the line. The logic gets more twisted and the assumptions required to get there get weirder. There's obviously some kind of self-worth thing involved, which is threatened by the intrusion of 'inferiors.' /

Technically, the loser usually pays the winner, regardless of who was the actual aggressor. See WWI. Sometimes the winner pays, to 'purchase' land that was beaten out of the loser, to avoid the appearance of aggressive conquest. See the Mexican-American War. That's not what's happening here, though.
