Some quite depressing findings from Richard Jones about cricket’s place in the sports news agenda, showing its decline. His analysis of regional press, national radio & X posts suggests cricket is disappearing from some commercial media, and is heavily reliant on the BBC for prominence. #CRN2026

🤔 Yet I argue we can’t rely on ECB-funded journalism to expose off-field issues like the Yorkshire racism scandal, and relative outsiders in podcasts and national media are better placed to provide critical, journalistic scrutiny.
100
Richard Jones @rlwjones.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
🙈 To its credit, the ECB generally doesn’t interfere and even turns a blind eye to intense criticism of things like The Hundred on the broadcasts it funds.
100
Richard Jones @rlwjones.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
📻 The ECB also returns some of the cash the BBC pays for international radio rights on Test Match Special, so it can be spent on county commentaries.
100
Richard Jones @rlwjones.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
✍️ The media therefore relies on subsidies from governing body the ECB – its Reporters’ Network provides a journalist at every game with articles available to all media, a model other sports might look to copy.

🧵 After the incredible England v India Test series, The Hundred starts today. But so too does county cricket's One Day Cup. Once a mainstay of UK sports media, I've investigated how the traditional county game is now battling for attention in our packed sports landscape.

Cricket is in an unusual position of being able to afford it: the Sky deal the ECB has is almost ten times the size of the one for rugby league. But it does rely on the continuing goodwill of the ECB to effectively prop up all this activity.

I’m the author, just butting in! I’d say it shows the breadth of county cricket media coverage across formats is impressive, but that somewhat masks the fact it is now heavily reliant on precariously employed freelancers and (for written journalism and local radio) ECB subsidies.
