Depends on how strong the books are

Love the Ioniq 5. We’ve just got another one: went round and round the options but the combination of comfort, space, range and charging time are, in our view, unbeatable.

No, not meaningless, just more complicated, as the UCL analysis makes clear. The difference between Eng and Scot scores in Maths for example is around twice the maximum correction required for the difference in participation rates.

PISA: Programme for International Student Assessment
PISA is the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment. PISA measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges.

Given Canada, Australia, NZ and the US (to select only the obvious examples ) all exceeded population exclusion limits, it is not clear how the analysis carried out at UCL would, if repeated for those countries, affect their PISA scores. So, yes, “may”

England’s participation rate may have relevance for its global ranking (although most anglophone countries can be criticised in this way) but not when it comes to comparison with other UK nations. The OECD expressly identifies Eng’s reforms as a model for success

I would pose a different question: what transactions with the US are of such strategic importance to the UK that HMG dare not risk them?

29% is probably at the upper end of realistic possibilities. More cautiously, 25% learning => 75% lower prices with five doublings Either way, the result for both EVs and BESS will be huge: a self-reinforcing feedback loop. More demand = lower prices = more demand = lower prices…

Avoid long grass, where they patrol. Insect repellent. Citronella torches at night can be good (but obvs not if the countryside is tinder dry).

And new 25kV substations cost around $300k per MW. Nothing is cheap in this market.
010
Rob HH @rlhh.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
This is exactly what Gridserve in GB did to install >1600 ultra-rapid charging bays at 200 locations over 5 years. The total installed capacity is estimated at >500MW, far in excess of what GB grids would otherwise be able to provide. They also used veg oil generators to support BESS backup.
000
Rob HH @rlhh.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
They don’t do full load constantly. The typical load factor for an ultra rapid charger is 15% over any 24 hour period. A 2MW station can therefore install a 4MW battery and rely on a relatively low power supply (~250kW) and throttle charges as needed during peak times

Rob HH @rlhh.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
All grid connections in every country I’ve worked in require permission. What takes excessive time is when the distribution /transmission utility requires upstream network reinforcement. Using a battery allows commissioning of the chargers ahead of reinforcement
040
Rob HH @rlhh.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
Comments like this are also often nonsensical. So what if the grid isn’t ready - use batteries. They’ll probably be a fraction of the cost of grid reinforcement. They will certainly be on line in a fraction of the time

I know the guy who ran the competition for National Grid (Hi Simon, if you see this). The ownership and excitement he demonstrated when talking about the project was truly infectious. Only a churl would argue it’s not a UK project

And to add one further point: suppose the West Burton demonstrator is successful. What do you think will happen to the company valuations of the companies who designed and built it? That IP and know-how has potentially vast commercial value, well before any actual commercial power station is built

Rob HH @rlhh.bsky.social · 26/03/2026
I said many programs globally are developing prototypes for future commercial reactors. When I speak to people in STEP, that is what they tell me they are doing. Please don’t import a meaning of your own.

STEP is intended to prove fusion can work as a power station, not as an experiment *and* provide a design for a fleet of future commercial plants In other words, STEP is explicitly pre-commercial demonstration. 2/2 Ends

Rob HH @rlhh.bsky.social · 26/03/2026
STEP mandate is demonstrate a commercially relevant fusion power plant It’s primary task is moving fusion into commercial viability by building a prototype plant that: - Produces net energy to grid - Has fuel self-sufficiency (tritium breeding) - Enables practical maintenance and operation 1/2

This is, I think, the crucial point. Legacy firms point at the subsidies as if they explain everything. They really don’t appreciate just how good the Chinese manufacturers are. That complacency could be lethal for the lot of them

I know a few people like this. For the most part they seem to believe it’s just delayed gratification. They hate the work, they hate their co-workers even more, but it’s all worth it because it’s only temporary. They mostly never do escape, of course.
