As #climate warms, some components of the climate system may eventually cross tipping points. This article examines what would be the consequences for the United Kingdom of a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). #climatechange www.thetimes.com/uk/environme...

Our benthic lander, ALFREDO (Ass-Kicking Lander For Researching the Deep Ocean), was given this pun name as a tribute to the late Spanish actor Alfredo Landa. After accidentally ending in an official report, nobody complained 😊, becoming its official name. I guess it's nice enough, isn’t it?

🧪Dissolved oxygen below the ocean surface is very unequally distributed. Some regions are oxygen-rich while other regions are entirely deprived of oxygen. I wrote a blog post that describes how the ocean gets ventilated (or not). #oceanography #oxygen #ocean denisgilbert.com/blog/f/2018-...

Oxygen pathways from the ocean's surface to the ocean's interior
As land-dwelling animals, we have the luxury of breathing in an atmosphere that is rich in oxygen. Ocean-dwelling animals are not as fortunate when it comes to extracting dissolved oxygen from seawate...

if you think about comparing the #deepsea with #space : don't ❤️ (1/5)
"Comparing the deep sea to the moon"
Table that compares the bottom of the ocean to the moon and Mars. One key message is that the surface of the ocean is way bigger but way less of it is mapped in high resolution (but we will probably continue mapping all 3 as technology improves). The other main point is that the bottom of the sea is covered in ocean, has no sunlight but there is life and more people have been there compared to the moon and Mars.
"There is no need to compare deep sea ecosystems with lifeless rocks in space. Researchers are doing there best, so give the a break from unfair comparisons."

Ice fishermen beware: a warming climate is thinning lake ice. That impacts fisheries and boosts flooding: "there’s a clear trend, and ice cover in the Great Lakes is decreasing” @DanRosZiff www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
