From Lavon's Covenant: For this scene, I asked myself, what's a mortal experience so ridiculous that if explained, even witches would think it was crazy? The answer: Space Jam. 💙📚 #WIPSnips #amwriting #amquerying #writingcommunity

“It’s kind of like basketball,” Ivan explains, glancing at Coop for confirmation, who nods enthusiastically. “Two teams compete to score by getting the ball in each other’s goals. But with magic, the goal teleports around the court, so you have to use spells to anticipate where it’s going to be and time your plays perfectly. It’s fast, unpredictable, and intense.”
Coop chimes in, turning to me with a grin, his hands full of what looks like popcorn but, as Ivan had informed me, was actually the popped bones of a sea serpent’s spine—explaining the faint green tint. “Ooh, Lavon, Telegoal is like real-life Space Jam when you add magic,” he says, nudging me, as if trying to lift the mood.
“What in mortal hell is Space Jam?” Demaria asks, her tone sharp with skepticism, like she can’t decide if the concept is too ridiculous or too intriguing to ignore.

Dad strides into the dining room carrying a steaming casserole dish of shredded chicken smothered in homemade queso, his glasses half-fogged from the heat and a pleased smile spreading across his face. “You know, I think Maynard tried to steal it for political gain, so Sterling stashed it away,” he says, lifting a knowing brow—the one he always uses when he’s certain he’s right.

Mom glares at him, her lips pressing into a tight line. “The point is,” she says sharply, her words clipped, “Sterling decided it was too dangerous and destroyed it.”

Dad sits across from me, raising his palms in surrender before making a zipper motion over his lips. Then, when mom isn’t looking, he leans toward me conspiratorially as he piles my plate with chicken, whispering, “Or he hid it.”
