One question which always arises when apotropaic motifs or ritual taper burn marks are discovered cut into expensive wooden panelling or furniture, such this compass drawn circle in the panelling of the Royal Room at the Mermaid Inn, Rye.

The almost forgotten tradition of the 'church ship' is preserved in the Mariner's Chapel of All Hallows by the Tower in London. Ship graffiti is relatively common - even in landlocked locations - which often incorporates Christian symbols and motifs as part of the image.

Upminster Tithe Barn was built c.1450 as part of the estate that supported Waltham Abbey. I was lucky enough to gain access (it is not yet open to the public) and saw that many of the timbers bore ritual taper burn marks. Read more - ritualprotectionmarks.com/2026/06/04/r...
