The way this site explodes every discourse into all-out war is disgusting But its also addictive to the part of my brain that loves to analyze the source of disagreements. The only option for me is to log off

Labeled diagram of mouse buttons. Left click is labeled with the male symbol, right click with the female symbol, middle click with 3, and the side button with 4.

The only outcome I'm predicting here is that blue wont be an insignificantly small group, which I think there is enough evidence for. Obv I wouldnt claim anything about how big the group is or which side will win

Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
I think you're missing my point I'm responding to the argument that almost everyone will obviously pick red by pointing out that the mere fact that these discussions are so contested is a sign that pressing red is not obvious, so reds must contend with the fact that blue will be pressed by some

Does it change your mind if you know one of your friends is most likely to stay on the tracks, as dumb as that is? I get your point btw, I'm not trying to prove why blue is right, I'm just using these analogies to explain the blue POV to people who don't get it

People gravitate to one way of looking at it (which button is default) and then cant understand why the other group would choose to actively switch and by doing so put themselves/others at risk. Thats why the sides are "why press the suicide button" and "why press the kill people button"

Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
Train metaphor is interesting because it selects one button as default If its framed as choosing to jump on, the pointlessness of the risk is emphasized If its framed as starting on the tracks (nobody will die if most stay) and choosing to jump off, putting others at risk is emphasized

Basically I'm saying there *is* a reason to pick the crusher room -- its if you thinking other people are going to go in there and want to help save them Your framing makes it sound like you're choosing to go in there first (since in a room you can see if anyone is under) which would be pointless
030
Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
But when I approach the button problem, I'm thinking of all the people who are gonna press blue no matter what as the "friends who are arbitrarily compelled". The point of my reframing is to highlight that thought process

You all really care about A and B. Unless three more of you go under the ceiling, they will die. So in that situation (which is, again, altered to make it favorable to blue) I think going under the ceiling makes sense Whether you think the same way on the buttons determines which button you press
030
Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
I'm gonna make the framing really biased towards blue to explain the blue way of thinking in the general problem Imagine you and your group of 10 extremely close friends were in this room. You all know persons A and B will definitely go under thr lowering ceiling for whatever reaso

Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
Well yes obviously, but I think it's safe to bet that a large group will press blue considering how adamant so many people are about it We can't know how big that group is but it makes me pretty confident the size isnt negligible
030
Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
Are you saying that if this was run irl the vast majority of people would pick red?

Best representation of the problem I've seen
010
Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
Basically I see it as a collective action where I want to trust everyone to vote blue even if it makes no sense from an individualized game theory perspective
050
Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
Every time this question is run, a significant portion of the group chooses blue - "everyone should just pick red" is not even remotely close to happening unless you coordinate So to me the framing is am I voting for at least 1/3 of people to die or live. My life doesnt feel relevant

Risse. @rissethe.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
My friend group went through this question a few years ago and everyone close to me chose blue, the only people who chose red lean conservative I feel like red only makes sense if A) you think most people will also choose red because it is obvious or B) you care mostly about your own life

It sucks so bad, we're at the point where innovation means a product that sounds futurey but has no benefits, and any actually useful technology is suspicious

Was searching for names on sketchy websites and I guess I'm out of touch with what's popular these days
Screenshot of a name-searching site.

The top section has the heading "Find the meaning of a first name"
and the subheading "Search for a first name to find its meaning, origin, and other interesting information and data." Beneath is a search bar reading "Type a first name".

The bottom section is labeled "Or try some of the most popular first names". A list of cards follows containing the names Christop, Alexande, Zilpah, Crete, Schley, Edw, Roll, Pembroke, Francisquita, Ng, Byrde, and Bengiman.

shoutout to probably the worst textbook diagram ive ever seen
Screenshot from a textbook diagram consisting of a black-and-white stock image of a road sign with the text "Innovation" placed on top. The road sign image is rotated so that the horizontal sides of the sign line up with the "Innovation" text. The skew of the sign in 3d space is not taken into account, so the vertical sides do not line up at all.
Caption reads "Figure 1.1: The term "innovation" seems to "pop up" almost everywhere."
