one of the most best usecases for p2p and true open social media is not having this

I found an optimization in our Bitsocial code for helia where instead of waiting for IPNS providers to announce they're subscribed to pubsub topic, we just fetch them if they announce providing the cid of the topic without waiting for their subscriptionchange gossipsub emission.

Ditch the DHT for http routers and it will speed up massively

Bitsocial cofounder here, thanks for the review! One important thing to add is all Bitsocial apps are interopable, so 5chan users can browse and publish to seedit. Also, web clients dont host any data, only code to instruct where to find peers from, same as bittorrent. Lmk if u have any questions!

im curious what happens if somebody spams from a blacksky app view and blacksky doesn't do anything about it? can bsky ban select people or only the app view?

I imagine it's too easy for a gov to come to bsky.app and tell them to do <x> and <y> otherwise we will have our ISPs ban ur domain. Same thing happens with app stores

I wish there was more effort into self hosting app views as well since that's an easy chokepoint to influence, evidenced by the age verification with bluesky that was rolled out.

I think bluesky's reliance on traditional DNS is problematic, we've all seen how domains get seized or censored. I was hoping Bluesky would roll out their own naming system that can be resolved p2p, but to do that you would need a blockchain for consensus which I understand is not a good look

Additionally, the article doesn't address users could have two modes of loading content - A user can load their subscription fully p2p with maximum censorship resistance, while fetching discovery feed from servers that have indexed the entire network.

Rinse - Bitsocial @rinse-bitsocial.bsky.social · 26/02/2026
An assumption of this article is that pure p2p apps can't have "ownership" which I disagree with. Using IPNS you could have a mutable record that is updated over pubsub with a keypair and signature. It will allow for BitTorrent level of scale while giving users/communities ownership of their data.

work is getting done on standardizing media for content addressablity. Pretty good for decentralized social media in the long term if we could have native p2p vids at some point

p2p tech is not easy, we thought we would have an MVP of a p2p communities reddit-like UI within 6 months but it took us 4 years and we're still grinding

Rinse - Bitsocial @rinse-bitsocial.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
We would love to use that for our communities since one of our biggest risks is private key leaking or getting stolen. If there's any updates on this lmk

Couldn't you give it high ttl but low cache duration so your IPNS record would stay around forever - assuming other people are joining the pubsub topic and keep the cid alive?

is it possible to have try peersky out on a webpage instead of its own app? Should be possible in theory with helia, no? DHT wouldn't work though so you would have to use http routers for finding providers

Plebbit (soon to rebranded to PKC/Bitsocial) solves this by peers exchanges challenges and answers with community owner directly via pubsub. Happy to be corrected though

Rinse - Bitsocial @rinse-bitsocial.bsky.social · 02/01/2026
You can either host your own gateway (but increases your costs and maintenance) or delegate it to somebody else, but then the person running the gateway can just lie and say peer <y> did solve all challenges correctly.
100
Rinse - Bitsocial @rinse-bitsocial.bsky.social · 02/01/2026
My biggest problem with it is not having arbitary challenges builtin, my understanding if you're community owner <x> and want to ask peer <y> to solve an anti spam challenge, you have to deploy an HTTP "gateway" that author needs to communicate with first, acquire the writing token.

I read about Willow and I have a few thoughts: - Willow seems to designed primarily for private access communities, I understand it has a mode for public but it's not as robust as we would like it to be.

@hexmani.ac also mintpass will add other ways to authenticate in the future by paying crypto to get your NFT

this is mintpass, one of the challenges you can set for your subplebbit (community) github.com/plebbitlabs/... A community can set up any kind of arbitary challenge, since it's just an API with `getChallenge` and `verifyChallengeAnswer`. You can have a whitelist, question-answer based challenge

yeah content is not great atm because not many people are running communities. We're looking to market within a few months once bugs are fixed and usability is pretty good
030
Rinse - Bitsocial @rinse-bitsocial.bsky.social · 28/11/2025
we're still hashing out a lot of bugs, not at MVP stage yet. Not many people running communities too so the content is stale

the p2p in browser is WIP but eventually browser peers will gossip to peers in network without any intermediaries + can also do bitswap. Although they can't provide content to other peers, only desktop nodes can do that
000
Rinse - Bitsocial @rinse-bitsocial.bsky.social · 28/11/2025
you can also go to seedit.app but that would load content from ipfs gateway (we still validate Cidv0(loadedContent) = requestedCidV0) and you publish pubsub messages to pubsub providers which gossip it to the network. That's all temporary, in the next few months we're gonna have p2p in browser too

I didn't make that landing page lol somebody from the community did. Maybe they vibe coded it or something. But that landing page doesn't use the protocol at all, you wanna go to github.com/plebbit/seedit and download the desktop app which embeds an ipfs node for pure p2p experience

Federation based designs aren't ideal because instance admins can delete user accounts and communities. Instance admins can block other instances. It's too difficult to run your own instance, you need to buy a domain name, server, DDOS protection, set up SSL, etc.

Rinse - Bitsocial @rinse-bitsocial.bsky.social · 28/11/2025
Agreed DHT is terrible. We rolled out plebbit nodes with it at the beginning but then had to switch to using http routers that's basically keyv of cidv0 to peers, same as bittorrent trackers. IPFS shipyard just published 0.39 with a lot of optimization for DHT providing logic, we may try DHT again
000
Rinse - Bitsocial @rinse-bitsocial.bsky.social · 28/11/2025
are you referring to corrupted bits or cryptography here? when we say trustless for plebbit we're referring to not needing to verify your instance or federation because all content is addressable + signed, same way bittorrent is trustless because you verify content => hash and drop peers who lie

can't imagine streaming with ipfs, the latency would go off the charts. Weren't there projects that did streaming on top of bittorrent? Not sure if they went anywhere
