Macron and his government have failed politically, socially and morally. And when a government can no longer inspire confidence, it uses violence. When "Luffy" becomes a greater threat to public order than fascism, perhaps it is time to reconsider who the Republic is protecting.

The Republic is safe. The children are the threat. Perhaps the real problem is not that these young people have become too radical, but that they have become too difficult to ignore. I wish the media, both in France and abroad would get that.

Apparently, in the land of Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, a teenager in an anime costume can become a public-order emergency, while neo-nazi groups gets to parade without being feared of being targeted by the police. How reassuring🙃

A state that seems to find the sight of young people demanding a future more threatening than the ideology of those who would deny one to others.

Their aim is to sow division and discredit the movement. Classic far-right provocateurs who are pretty well-known for hijacking legitimate movements of protests.

Reports from French newspapers Libération say far-right groups infiltrated Saturday’s demonstrations in France, attacked protesters, and are calling for further mobilization on November 1 in the name of a so-called “race war.”

The face of tourists discovering that #France is nothing like Emily in Paris and that we don’t actually spend our days walking around in Louboutin stilettos. Not only can most of us commoners not afford them, but try protesting or running from tear gas wearing those instruments of torture💀.

Tired of hearing from abroad that “#France is burning.” French student protests are messy, joyful & deeply political.Blocking a country is a way to put pressure on the state when ordinary channels fail. The main issue is how the state responds: repression, riot police, and alleged agent provocateurs.

Even offensive speech is protected. Only legally defined restrictions, applied proportionately, can justify limiting it.

Rim-Sarah Alouane, Ph.D. @rim-sarah.eurosky.social · 08/10/2026
The danger goes beyond a few confiscated signs: when police decide which political messages are acceptable in the street, the right to protest becomes conditional on police approval. And yes, it is dangerous for democracy, and yes, those are authoritarian methods.

Rim-Sarah Alouane, Ph.D. @rim-sarah.eurosky.social · 08/10/2026
Police have no general power to censor political speech. Security checks are one thing. Seizing signs because of their message is another. Without a specific legal basis, such seizures may be unlawful & violate freedom of expression (which is constitutionally protected under French and European law)

In France, police have reportedly been confiscating protest signs before protests because of their slogans, including messages critical of the police. Spoiler alert; it is totally illegal under French law & this should alarm anyone who cares a tiny little bit about civil liberties.

Children’s rights are legally protected, both on an international and domestic level. They're not privileges granted at the discretion of the state. France should be held to the standards it has accepted under international law (just my two cents). #JustSaying

Police brutality is basically the state using coercive power against children for exercising their fundamental rights. When authorities respond to political expression by children with intimidation, force, or violence, France is failing its obligations under international human rights law.

Rim-Sarah Alouane, Ph.D. @rim-sarah.eurosky.social · 07/10/2026
I know that nobody cares about international law these days but still. France is a party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We are legally obligated to respect children’s freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and to protect them from violence and abusive treatment.

Let’s not forget France’s overseas territories, where the situation is dire. Public services are severely lacking, and in many cases, the crisis is arguably even more acute than in mainland France.

Fund, protect and rebuild public services. Tax wealth more fairly. Stop handing out tax breaks to those who need them least. Use taxpayers’ money to actually fund the services taxpayers depend on.

So no, we should not be surprised. A society can't normalize coercion when it is directed at racialized and impoverished communities and then act astonished/shocked/terrified when the same institutional violence is extended to them.

what many people now describe as a shocking escalation did not begin today. The practices were tested for years in neighborhoods whose residents had less political power to make themselves heard.

Many reports by human rights organizations, alongside findings from France’s own Defender of Rights, have documented serious concerns about discriminatory police fines and harassment targeting Black and Arab boys and young men, including *minors*.
130 3
Rim-Sarah Alouane, Ph.D. @rim-sarah.eurosky.social · 07/10/2026
Too many people in positions of political and institutional authority chose not to listen, or worse, condone such practices.

Rim-Sarah Alouane, Ph.D. @rim-sarah.eurosky.social · 07/10/2026
Spoiler alert; this did not emerge from nowhere. For decades, Black, Arab and North African communities, esp. in working-class & marginalized neighborhoods, have warned about racial profiling, humiliating identity checks, harassment and excessive force.

Rim-Sarah Alouane, Ph.D. @rim-sarah.eurosky.social · 07/10/2026
In the protests currently going on, children are being subjected to policing practices that would be indefensible even against adults. A child is not an enemy combatant. A teenager is not a threat simply because they are present in a public space and dare to exercise their right to protest.
121 2
Rim-Sarah Alouane, Ph.D. @rim-sarah.eurosky.social · 07/10/2026
These are precisely the kinds of policing practices we routinely love to condemn when they are used by authoritarian regimes elsewhere. We should be no less willing to confront them when they occur in a "democracy" (sic).
110 1
Rim-Sarah Alouane, Ph.D. @rim-sarah.eurosky.social · 07/10/2026
We are now seeing police forces trained and equipped for confrontation deploy that coercive logic against people who pose no serious threat: demonstrators, residents of working-class neighborhoods, children and teenagers.
