History favors boring, integrated systems over elegant architectures that are painful and costly to operate.

I'm not saying specialized vector databases will disappear. But they'll survive at the extremes. For most applications, native vector support inside a broadly adopted database (cough, cough… like @redis.io) will win simply because it reduces the number of moving parts.

Ricardo Ferreira @riferrei.com · 14/01/2026
In the real world, teams don't fail because vector search is 5–10% slower. They fail because integration is hard, brittle, and expensive.

Ricardo Ferreira @riferrei.com · 14/01/2026
Eventually, we spend years trying to glue everything back to the databases we were already running. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ricardo Ferreira @riferrei.com · 14/01/2026
First, we build a specialized system. Then we hire and retain specialized teams *because* of them. Soon enough, those teams need additional governance just to keep integrations working.

I've watched this cycle repeat for years: JSON, full-text search, spatial data, analytics—and now vectors.

Ricardo Ferreira @riferrei.com · 14/01/2026
Vectors don't live in isolation. They live with filters, joins, permissions, transactions, updates, and analytics. The moment you move into a separate system, you're not "scaling better." You're signing up for data duplication, consistency problems, and fragmented query logic.

Another interesting usage of Redis with LLMs is as the memory layer of your agents, so that they can "remember" details from your users within the same thread (a.k.a short-term memory) and between threads (a.k.a long-term memory).

Ricardo Ferreira @riferrei.com · 19/08/2025
One way is using semantic caching with Redis. By storing answered LLM calls in memory and using vector embeddings to find semantically similar queries, you can serve cached answers to users really fast, even if their prompt is not precisely the same as the original question.

Ricardo Ferreira @riferrei.com · 19/08/2025
LLMs' fanciness and increasing intelligence don't change the reality—ultimately, they're just API calls. As such, they suffer from the same problems as API calls, such as throttling, timeouts, and exponential delays. 🔌 ⚡️ ➡️ But you can use clever ways to make LLM calls faster.

(Placeholder copy) The old way of doing event marketing—a large, inflexible investment in a small number of tentpole events—doesn't fit into a business world that demands adaptability and speed. But there's no substitute for IRL connections, so the most innovative businesses are focusing on scaling local and hybrid events that are fast, flexible, and hyper-effective at driving meaningful connections.
