You could tell Ed Wood really tried with Plan 9 and it’s sad he never got to live long enough to see his work be re-evaluated as subversive cult classics and be the subject of everything from MST3K to a Johnny Depp-Tim Burton biopic that actually netted an Oscar.

Bingo. It wasn’t perfect, but you get the sense that Ed Wood really tried his best with what he had at his disposal. It’s a shame he didn’t live long enough for the Johnny Depp movie in ‘94 or beyond where his films became cult classics.

With all that said, is it a viable contender for worst film of all time? Probably, but it manages to be strangely endearing and you can see Ed Wood’s passion and ambition shine through at points, which makes it more palatable to get through than Manos or Birdemic.

Maybe if it was packaged as a light-hearted comedy, it would have mitigated somewhat the campy visuals of cardboard steering wheels in what’s supposed to be the cockpit of an airplane or rows of bockity tombstones on astroturf.

Trying to even categorize Plan 9 in a film genre is challenging. It’s a horror film with very little that’s scary. It tries to be dramatic, but comes off as comedic when that wasn’t the case. It’s science fiction without credible science.

They’re both heavily flawed films, but with Plan 9, it’s got better sound mix, better staging and even if the dialogue is labored, Gregory Walcott does an admirable job in keeping the thread together. Manos felt like it tried to do the bare minimum in all departments and we got even less.

Wood managed to take archived footage he shot of Lugosi for shelved projects like The Vampire’s Tomb and The Ghoul Goes West and work that into the start of the film with any “new” material provided by Tom Mason, Wood’s wife’s chiropractor in a cape.

I can’t talk about Plan 9 without acknowledging Bela Lugosi. He was heavily advertised to be a leading role in the movie, but his abrupt death before filming seemingly threw a wrench in those plans. Or did they?!

Plan 9 has all the old familiar beats of Ed Wood and more: Scenes done in the first take, impossible geography, laughable production values, liberal stock footage usage, awkward dialogue, inexplicable changes from day to night and a puzzlingly ponderous story.
