Because riders organized to demand it, we've secured a commitment from @council.nyc.gov to fund free transit for low-income NYers who need it most — but we aren't done yet! Today, we're canvassing at 8 transit hubs in all 5 boros to bring thousands of new riders into the fight to expand Fair Fares!

New Yorkers deserve a fare cut! Today, riders rallied on the steps of City Hall to call on Mayor Mamdani and our elected leaders to bring free and half-price transit to over 2 million New Yorkers!

Access to fast, reliable public transit is a *right*. By expanding Fair Fares eligibility to more working families, Mayor Mamdani can eliminate transportation costs as a barrier to opportunity for over 2 million New Yorkers!

There's no challenge bigger than the resolve and imagination of New Yorkers. That's why we believe making buses free for every rider as part of @NYCMayor's ambitious affordability agenda is more than achievable — we can exceed it! How? Bringing free/half-price subway rides to 2 million New Yorkers.

On Sunday, riders took action to demand an affordability agenda that meets the moment. One that will offer free and reduced transit fare to more than 2 million New Yorkers by expanding the Fair Fares program and making our buses free for all riders.

Plus an analysis of how implementing BRT elements would slash commute times along Flatbush Avenue! The main takeaway: Faster boarding + signal priority + getting buses out of traffic (the big one) are key to bringing our buses up to speed.

🚇 Riders Alliance @ridersalliance.org · 27/10/2025
So, how do we get there? By implementing Bus Rapid Transit into the design of major transit corridors like Flatbush Avenue, we can get buses out of traffic and offer consistent, reliable service 24/7. The article has a great visual breakdown of what that looks like in action!

Along it's route from Downtown to Kings Plaza, the B41 spends more time at red lights than moving. Right now, the entire trips takes 58 minutes. But, "...if the bus were traveling the corridor totally unimpeded, it would need only 16 minutes to go from end to end."

🚇 Riders Alliance @ridersalliance.org · 06/10/2025
What we're calling for isn't new or expensive. It's a recommitment from our next Mayor to build the projects Mayor Adams has abandoned, implement *real* BRT (not just red paint!), and to treat our buses and its millions of daily riders with respect and dignity.

Thanks to analysis from People Oriented Cities, we know that upgrading buses on Utica Avenue to BRT-level service would result in 17-minute time savings — cutting the trip from Dekalb Ave to Kings Plaza by nearly 40%!

We know what we need (BRT!), we know where we need it, and after four years of waiting for City Hall to do what's needed to speed up the nation's slowest buses, we know what's missing — the political will to do it.

With Andrew Cuomo in charge, instead of new bus lanes, faster trips, and lower fares, riders got budget cuts, fare hikes, and… USB-A chargers (somewhat handy if you’re expecting a long wait). Riders deserve better than another Cuomo trainwreck — DO NOT rank Cuomo for Mayor! 3/3

In 2018, Andrew Cuomo threw riders under the bus by canceling $30,000,000 to expand Select Bus Service. Why? Because Cuomo was way more interested in expensive vanity projects than improving service. 2/3

While he was Governor, Andrew Cuomo ran the slowest buses in the country, averaging just 8.3MPH in August 2021, when he resigned in disgrace after being outed as a sexual predator. But, just in case, here are more reasons why we’re telling bus riders DO NOT rank Cuomo for Mayor. 1/3

When asked for comment on the overwhelming success of his own law, Andrew Cuomo says "This is bad, actually." before shuffling off to Westchester in the back of an Escalade.

Did you know Cuomo signed the law that brought us the nation’s first, overwhelmingly successful congestion pricing program? But you won’t hear him take credit for it. If Cuomo had his way, he’d bring back gridlock traffic, crawling buses, and defund our transit system. DO NOT RANK CUOMO FOR MAYOR.

As riders dealt with the worst subway service *in the world*, Andrew Cuomo cut half a billion from signal upgrades to pay for useless vanity projects. And when riders demanded Governor Cuomo fix the subway? Of course he skirted responsibility. Pathetic. 2/4

As Governor, Andrew Cuomo wasted years letting our subways crumble into disrepair. In 2017, when subway on-time performance hit a historic low of 65%, he declared an emergency for the Cuomo-created series of systemwide failures that became known as the Summer of Hell. 1/4

This is how Cuomo prioritizes transit funding. It’s not about how these projects benefit riders’ commutes, it’s about how they benefit his image. That’s not leadership riders can count on. That’s a trainwreck waiting to happen—one we CANNOT allow into City Hall. 5/5

Gutting MTA’s budget isn’t Cuomo’s only trick. He also knows how to waste our tax dollars on vanity projects that have ZERO use in improving bus and subway service, but make GREAT photo-ops. What's $100,000,000 for decorative towers or $350,000,000 light shows on bridges? 4/5

In 2016, Andrew Cuomo siphoned $4,900,000 from MTA, ordering them to cut a check to UPSTATE SKI RESORTS to cover expenses completely unrelated to moving New Yorkers from A-B (obviously). 2/5

Cuomo's concerns don’t lie with the millions of riders he represented. He used the MTA's budget as a convenient piggy bank. He STOLE our bus and subway fares. That’s not leadership riders can count on. That’s a trainwreck waiting to happen—one we CANNOT allow into City Hall. 5/5

Cuomo repeatedly ordered the MTA to cannibalize its budget to excuse his own executive ineptitude, all while the complete service meltdown of 2017’s Summer of Hell was brewing under his watch. 4/5

Then, again, in 2015, he raided MTA’s operating budget for *$121,500,000*, again resulting in widespread service cuts and, again, forcing riders to bail him out for failing to produce a balanced budget. 3/5

🚇 Riders Alliance @ridersalliance.org · 07/05/2025
In 2011, Andrew Cuomo defunded MTA’s operating budget by hundreds of millions of dollars. In 2013 and 2014, Cuomo raided at least $10,000,000 from MTA’s operating budget (the money used to fuel buses, pay drivers, etc) — forcing new service cuts to balance the state budget. 2/5

Andrew Cuomo is the current frontrunner for Mayor, and, for riders, his comeback would be a nightmare. As Governor, Cuomo raided MTA funds, hiked fares, and let subway delays quadruple. He's NEVER been a rider—he only uses our subways as a political prop. 1/3
