💝 Happy Valentine's Day to all! 💘 My daughter sent me pics of my granddogs, Suz the Cat and Lyra Bean. 🥰
Suz the Cat, my son-in-law's ancient black and cream Pomeranian dog, is wearing a headband with Valentine's hearts on springs and sticking out her tongue like she's blowing a raspberry at us. My daughter's Corgi, Lyra, is dressed for Valentine's Day in a boinging heart headband and red heart fashion shades. Looking cooperative, hopeful, and so fine.

This year, instead of stocking stuffers for my family, I'm making rainforest birdhouses for them. I've left it until the last minute, of course. This is one of Larkin's favorite projects until it's time to use noisy power tools. She loves collecting sticks and moss and lichen and more sticks.
Cutting an alder log into sections to build a birdhouse. The midsection of the birdhouse is hollowed out and I've added in some wood shavings for the birds to use or excavate.

The forstner bit that I used to drill the entrance hole makes beautiful, fancy, round shavings. I think the birds will like them. The rainforest birdhouse is assembled and decorated with moss-covered branches, lichen, bark, and pinecones. I read that moss has antibacterial attributes, and birds will use pieces of it in their nest.Larkin, my blue Heeler dog, is standing in front of me at the workbench, pleading with me to stop using the noisy power tools. Usually she just goes outside and hassles anything that moves, but it was pouring down rain and she just wanted everything to stop. The rain, the noise, the nonsense.

Stick of the Day We walked out to the road to get the Sunday paper and I saw a white beacon shining in the woods. It was a big ice flower growing out of the top of a tree trunk. Sorry it's out of focus. My phone camera won't take sharp pics anymore. Anyway, I got pics and Larkin got a great stick.
My blue heeler dog, Larkin, is running down our woodsy driveway balancing a +/-14' stick between her teeth. Joy!A bright white 7" ice flower growing from the top of a mossy old tree trunk. Big, beautiful ice flower!

Happy #SkySunday to all who celebrate. Larkin and I are on our first perimeter check of the morning. Dark and frosty northern morning at the bee farm. There's a wild thing scream-talking down in the woods. I'm hoping it isn't the cougar. I saw a shooting star just now. A good omen, right?
Tall forest trees silhouetted against a dark, starry, early morning sky. A tiny, cozy cabin, lit from within, can just be seen glowing at their feet.

For Thanksgiving, Suz the Cat was made to wear one of the chicken hats that my sister gave to me. It suits her, I think.
Suz the Cat, the black and cream Pomeranian dog that my son-in-law inherited from his grandmother, was made to wear a festive, sparkling, pink hat festooned with feathers, beads, and flowers that was meant for the chickens. Suz wears it better! She puts me in mind of Hyacinth Bucket.

Whatta day. Sounded windy at times last night but not so windy as some storms that frighten Larkin. At 6AM, I took Annie's meds to her & she & Rowan were gone. Annie's double shelter had rolled over onto its roof in the night & torn open the fencing. The geldings were still safe in their paddock.
Annie's double Noble shelter rolled over backwards and settled on its roof.No animals were injured in the making of this windstorm documentary. Later in the day and Annie's horse shelter is still upside-down, happily resting on its roof.

A glorious early morning here! My pics don't do justice to the colorful beauty of the clouds, or of my favorite cow, Good. Goody had something on her mind this morning that she tried to share with me but I was too dense to understand her. She's really much prettier than this pic lets on. #cows
Looking down a curving drive running between two green pastures. Seen through fog in the distance are the white barns of the cattle farm. The low lying, early morning clouds are glowing with pale pink and yellow tinged light. So beautiful!A closer view of the white cattle barns seen through early morning fog and crowned by glowing puffy clouds of pale pink, yellow and grey.

I often struggle with ALT text but my wish is that everyone could see how beautiful this morning was. A black cow named Good is standing on golden poplar leaves and green grass under a dramatic sky full of clouds. The expression on her face tells of her effort to mind meld with me. It is hopeless; I'm incapable of reading her thoughts.

Quiet, rainy weekend at the bee farm with my bestie.
Blue heeler dog looking up at her person from a cold, wet forest floor and weighing her options.
Larkin is so patient with me. I was standing on a log for 10 minutes or more, fooling with my Samsung phone camera settings. It used to take lovely, sharp photos but now they're always blurry. It seems to be a thing with S22's. I googled it. First they work and then they get a fatal update. Unidentified red shelf fungi growing on a most log in a PNW rainforest. Unidentified mushrooms that look like elf bells on tall, skinny stalks. Growing on a moss and leaf covered tree in the rainforest. Substantial white mushroom laid to rest under a big leaf maple leaf blanket.
The game trails at the bee farm are covered with broken mushrooms. As if a black bear in a snit kicked them all down.

It was shoeing day, so despite being loaded to the gills with cold medicine I was out in the barn trying to protect my shoer from the wayward whims of my naturally wicked horses. He's such a good sport, and the horses really are fond of him. Sorry, I don't have a pic of him today.

Happy Friday, everyone! And happy weekend! Old news: I'm still trying to retire from the cattle farm. Bad news: we've gone through two manager trainees so far. One quit, and the other was let go. Good news: not currently having a trainee has freed me to go to horse camp and continue repairs.
Open Range warning sign on the way to horse camp. I'm hoping the livestock company that runs cattle out here will have rounded them up and taken them home for the winter. They've been allowed to run wild and be destructive this year.Wood fence posts in a pickup truck at sunrise.
I'm still rebuilding the corral. Plant and animal life harmed by the fire are slowly returning and rebuilding, too.The head herd bull of the elk, peering at me from my snow pond. He comes down to my place every evening at dusk, stands in the middle of the pond, and bugles his herd in to join him when he feels it's safe. It's very joyous, especially for the calves. Lovely to watch. The head bull elk and a few members of his herd, staring at me from the hillside. They've just left the pond and will go wherever they go to at night. When I wake in the morning, they'll be grazing around my travel trailer. Until Larkin and I step outside. She chases them out of the yard. I counted over 70 of them one morning. So good to see them back here now that the land is healing from the fire.

Around here, holiday weekends are the best time to work with nervous horses. It's quiet. Wonderfully quiet. Everyone's away, so there's no thundering yardcare equipment, screaming kids, roaring Harleys, fighting dogs. Rowan is tiny compared to every other horse I've had & my tack doesn't fit her.
Little mare Rowan being fitted to tack. I think my endurance saddle will be just right if I change it over to centerline rigging. This is the first time mares Annie and Rowan have been tied up at the horse trailer at the same time. They were so well-behaved! No squealing or striking. No spinning or pulling back. No dangerous monkey business at all.

The next step is to load them both into the trailer and haul them to the bee farm for the day. Tomorrow, maybe, except traffic is going to be a nightmare tomorrow afternoon. So maybe not.

Stick of the Day. You can see Larkin's problem here, trying to navigate deep tumbleweed with a very long stick. She finally substituted it with the shorter stick & soon forgot about both when we closed in on this group of hostile cattle. @darlandmountain.bsky.social, might this be tumble mustard?

Larkin & I are at our place in E. Washington this week. The range cattle are tearing it apart. I'm in town buying fencing tools & supplies. Larkin has been helping herd cattle for the first time, and she's surprisingly very good at it. Very controlled. Water in my snow pond in August. Incredible.
Driving out the old Stagecoach Road to my place.Larkin has treed her first chipmunk. She's trying to figure out how to climb the fence to get it.My snow pond has never had water in it being the spring melt. It's green and gross because the Martinez Ranch cattle have been using it.Stupid, smelly cattle. I'm not a fan.
My house used to sit where I'm standing. That's the gate into what was Larkin's coyote-proof dog yard.

Things are slowly falling into place with Annie and Rowan. Today gave me a big surprise. Annie has been objecting to Rowan following her so closely. It's been triggering Annie's bad behavior toward Rowan, etc. Bad Annie. Today, Rowan came right out with it. She's herding Annie. R is alpha mare ☹️
Mares Annie and Rowan engaging in mutual preening. This is great. Healthy.Mare Annie is always looking to me for support, and now I understand why. Rowan is a burgeoning alpha mare. This isn't great because of the way she's going about it, but now that I see it, I can work with it. I can stop accusing Annie and support her better.Horses always look goofy from this under-the-chin perspective. Cartoon smile.Rowan, I think, is brighter than most horses. Extra curious. She likes to figure out how objects work, or what she can do with them. She's a lock picker. I ordered a toy for her today.
