Update on my 15’ Tulip poplar that was eaten by a beaver, ran over by a huge sweet gum trunk and eaten to the ground by deer. These trees are tough. #nativeplants

March 14th after beaver cut the tree down and a large sweetgum had rolled over it.

Photo taken June 28th after caging and skirting the plant. The tree was also mowed to the ground by deer before I skirted it. Really tough trees.

It’s a good day. I found a passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) vine coming up under my loblolly pines. I’ve never even seen any in my neighborhood. Look before you cut. You never know what you might find. The first photo is my vine and the second is a stock photo of a bloom. #nativeplants

Looks like I have some Phlox peeking its head above the rest of the thicket below. I’m fighting invasives with a once a year winter cut and this is the first year I have seen the Phlox. It’s blooming 25’ away too. A good sign in my struggle against the invasives. Never give up😊 #nativeplants

Drinking coffee this morning next to the St. John’s Wort. Won’t be too long before the Wingstem and Yellow Crownbeard bloom. Hope a get a few surprises this summer from the winter spring flooding at the creek edge. Still hoping for volunteer Purple Ironweed that I have seen upstream. #nativeplants

Busy day digging up plants that were not doing well and needed to be relocated. I’m going to nurse them back to full health in my ICU nursery before replanting them. A couple came up on my creek path and needed a new home. #nativeplants

A healthy Christmas fern that can up in my gravel path I made down to the creek last fall. Potted it and added to nursery stock for planting somewhere later.

Four Rainbow Leucothoe that were not doing well in their present location where they get too much sun and probably don’t drain well enough. I cut the dead off and repotted in 70% potting mix and 30% perlite. I’ll nurse these back to full health and plant next spring.

An Alabama Croton that just wasn’t living up to its full potential in its current spot. Too much sun and not enough drainage in the spot with heavy clay. This one is too special to let it die there. I’ll find the perfect spot after I nurse it back.

River Oats that can up in my gravel path I made down to the creek last fall. Cut and potted them. Added to nursery stock for planting somewhere later. Probably will end up next to the creek entrance steps when I add them later in the summer.

Most if not all of my second nest bluebird fledglings have left. Possibly one left or mom is already scouting next nest location. Frantic feeding is over. Nice picture of mom on the house with a finch to the right. My purple coneflowers are blooming nicely in the wildflower meadow. #nativeplants

Last year it was bats in the siding. This year a tree swallow (I think) nest outside our bedroom window. I have Caroline wren nests under the top floor deck. Nature😊 I often have tree swallow swarms above our native wildflower meadow particularly after it rains. 🐤🕊️🐣🐝🦋 #nativeplants

I potter 17 Virginia Sweetspire (Itea) today in one gallon pots. I hope have 50 potted in a couple of days. I’ll let them hang around until next spring when I deploy them in my battle against some invasive periwinkle and Japanese silt grass on my my slope next to Cypress Creek 🌱 🌊 😊

This may not be beautiful but what a testimate to the hardiness of Arrowwood Viburnum. After three seasons of heavy ground hog pressure and serious creek side flooding it refuses die. I planted three and two remain. The one I lost actually was physically removed by flooding. Gone. #nativeplants

I’m restoring the hillside between my house and the creek and need lots of native plants. It’s going to take a while but I installed this today to start my raised beds to propagate needed plants. This is one of the Leucothoe I propagated from clippings late last summer. #nativeplants

It’s great to see my Alabama Croton coming alive. It came from a late summer clipping off one my existing plants. Worked moving a wood pile I had on concrete where I’m about to install 4 raised beds. Also, Fothergilla in bloom, a slimy salamander and a red eft. It’s all connected. #nativeplants

Such a day yesterday planting five large shade trees and digging up ten small ones along our row of large trees to take to my sister. I planted 2 sugar maples I named Shimmer and Shake. I also planted a willow oak, a pin oak and a Shumard oak. #nativeplants

My sugar maple I named Shake. Not as showy as Shimmer but still a striking tree and she has the moves when the wind picks up.

Some sycamores, tulip poplars and oaks to trade with my sister. I’m getting sassafras, sumac and hairy aster.
