Right but it would be better if it was instant which you can get with caching. And if you want to hold back you remove the glimmers.
010
Ricky @ricky.fm · 26/06/2026
Yeah but the alternative is waiting a microtask
010
Ricky @ricky.fm · 25/06/2026
So “stream with suspense” and “use a cache for content” for instant nav is exactly how async react is supposed to work, that’s why transitions commit with suspense fallbacks for new content instead of holding back.

In my talk, you can see this in the login page example. The login button shows a spinner while you wait for the login to submit, but after login the app instantly shows the Home Screen shell with glimmers.

action props help so that the default is click -> spinner/ optimistic state. So there’s default loading feedback for navigations which works the same whether you await a mutation or not. But that’s the floor. The ideal is instant for most things.

Ricky @ricky.fm · 25/06/2026
The premise isn’t flawed, without a design component library that provides action props with built in loading states (which is most apps), the experience is click -> nothing happens. That’s bad.

It doesn’t have to be a Promise instance, just a thenable. How would you do it instead?

... i have joined the @nextjs.org team at @vercel.com. for a start, i'll be working part-time, so please don’t flood me with bug reports yet. however, i’ll try to keep an eye on them as i want to understand what problems Next.js users are running into every day. i want App Router to get good!

You’d think, but people do it. I think because this is what you’d do with the legacy throw promise way to suspend.

It's sooooo nice when people don't just post feedback but actually submit PRs. Max is great, be like Max.

Ah yeah, in both threads I said you can but on twitter I explained why you shouldn’t

Ricky @ricky.fm · 21/05/2026
I’d use client hint headers and wrap the one you don’t need in Activity hidden so it’s excluded from SSR
110
Ricky @ricky.fm · 21/05/2026
No, I think I’m saying the same thing there. Even in this thread you’re asking for a feature (partial hydration) not explaining why selective hydration / Suspense / Activity doesn’t work.

We’re pretty close to having an initial Rust port of React Compiler. My approach was to iterate on the plan document (write it manually, have the agent expand, edit, repeat). Then try to run it, see what goes wrong, revert back to the plan, tweak the plan, repeat.

IIRC we didn’t do that because we would like to change it to be an installer to select any of the well known frameworks instead

If you’re posting to a /toggle endpoint it’s still not safe. Not sure there’s general guidance here. That’s why for most cases I would either just let them queue (using optimistic to update the UI), or disable the button while in flight

adding event handlers is subscribing to an external system (the DOM) so it fits for events.

Why do you need to attach the listener in a ref callback? We flush effects sync in updates for user events exactly for this use case

Yes

There are two blockers to autodeps. 1) people really hate the idea of not seeing the array (but that’s fine, you could still choose to write it) and 2) if you think about useEffectEvent primarily as “untracked” then you need to see the deps. But if you think of it as separating events, you don’t
