do you think that the cultural-reference aliens have social media where all the replies to a joke are "Captain America, understanding the reference"

it seems to me that at some point "low" switched from "lowest temp between midnights" to "lowest temp we'll reach tonight" which honestly helps me plan better! (this could also be how it's always been done and I was making bad assumptions before? I dunno)

I'm so sorry for your loss. Brian was one of a kind.

Oh, this is awful. I knew Brian from Twitter of old, and he was always such a kind and interesting guy. When I was working on the Able Archer 83 season of SNAFU, I made sure the producers interviewed him. I was like, hey I know a guy who drove tanks in Cold War wargames, plus he's a historian now.

My neighbor told me his 1973 Ford Bronco keeps eating his neighborhood coyotes so I asked how many coyotes there are and he said he just goes to the ravine and gets a new coyote afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding ravine coyotes to his Bronco and then his daughter started crying.

there's a WILD irony in demanding that the thing you just misread should have been written in a simplified manner to avoid misinterpretation, while not taking care that your quoting of it to thousands of people represents the writer's intention accurately.

The replies and qts to Josh were pretty crazy, but all united by a common demand: "clearly signal 'good' or 'bad.' Do not try to make a complicated point." This I think its a problem when we spend too much time online. We just want to say "agree/disagree" and not think.

yeah, i was blocked for my trouble
030
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
this whole thing seems to have happened because a prominent and influential ai critic misread the post, and that misreading primed their followers to share the faulty interpretation. this user then doubled down, insisting that the fault lies in the writing, ignoring how they spread the misreading.
170
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
that is such a serious problem here (maybe elsewhere too, i don't know!) it's a combination of not wanting to admit when they're wrong, plus very often not wanting to go against the interpretation of another user with whom they have a parasocial relationship or who wields great bluesky influence

this extremely bluesky person also accused josh of trolling because he didn't express his thought in the most simplified manner possible, including all the context that would help the most uninformed reader parse it without having to suffer the indignity of pondering for a moment

Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
the idea that everything has to be simplified to this degree is an insult to the idea of language and inquiry
100
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
no, he was not seeking to bait people into misinterpreting his thought and attacking him in bad faith. he just said something in the way he wanted, without reducing it to the basest level of human communication, and people were extremely bluesky about it

Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
he continues (this is all in that first post) to say that this pervasive ai intrusion into our data environment is weakening our collective ability to understand where information comes from and how we know things that's what I got from the post and from existing in the world prior to the post
0182
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
but a lot of bluesky users have difficulty reading once they see a keyword that triggers their kneejerk response, so they reply to an imagined character who just loves ai so much, because who else would say that ai critics use the forbidden technology
1100
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
the context here, of course, is that ai proponents constantly claim that ai critique is illegitimate because it comes from non-users but josh is saying that no, in fact we're all subject to ai inserted everywhere and so are indeed qualified to critique it
2172
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
the problem many people seem to have is that they don't want those incidental, unrequested invocations of ai to be counted against them in their anti-ai purity and yeah, i feel that but josh's description is not advocacy. he is describing what he considers to be a negative situation
1111
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
he did, but if you need it fully unpacked: ai permeates the tech we use to such a degree that it is very difficult to fully avoid it, because even a simple search now includes invoking an ai response or unseen backend feature. so even critics of AI are likely to use ai
3132
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
the problem here is not that the speech was political; it is that people saw some keywords and reacted to those words in anger rather than to what he actually said, and therefore assumed it was political in the wrong way
000
Charles Louis Richter @handle.invalid · 05/10/2026
I find Josh's post to be perfectly clear and am honestly disturbed by how so many people read "someone who critiques ai" and instantly go on the defensive as if the second sentence doesn't even exist, let alone the second half of the first.
