Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 29/09/2026If you've got space away from trees, a simple pole hanging feeder works if you cover the pole in Vaseline. Easy and hours of fun watching them try. Plus the squirrels end up with beautifully moisturised feet. 010
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I agree, it would solve so many problems - but it would either cost about £100bn or require some clever legislation that no-one's yet thought of. 100
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Thanks for the thread. What I don't understand is how the government invests in new grid assets (a substation, a new grid link) which are then ?owned and managed by the existing private DNO/TNOs? That's a nice gift for them if so. The lack of detail is confusing! 130
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Fahnbulleh's bit on Politics Weekly made it no clearer. I just hope *they* have an idea, but given that we're still waiting for GB Energy to find its role I'm not sure. 110
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Heck of a regular excavation! If it's just for investigation, usually you do geophys or ground penetrating radar and look at what turns up in that. There's a solar farm planned for the site but it's across a couple of fields and none of the others have markings like this. Weird innit? 010
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 25/09/2026"Net zero" is a Johnson era term and a lot of us (I think you also?) were unimpressed with it from the start. It's a weaselly indirect bit of skirting round the big issue (emission reductions) and I hate the idea that we might have to now defend it. 110
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Maybe this sort of thing always happens eventually when organisms start with tool use. Maybe a couple of million years is all you get before inevitably doing something stupid enough to wipe yourself out, and that's why there doesn't seem to be anyone else out there. 001
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Doesn't necessarily extend to a proportionate response but still noteworthy. 011

Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I'm the last person to attack climate action but looking at how policy around Net Zero is being implemented - in a bureaucratic fudgestorm of dodgily awarded contracts to corporate blaggers in a desperate search for economic growth - it is only a matter of time before it becomes indefensible. 120

Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 16/08/2026My colleague did a pretty deep dive on it, we found it's really tough to make it pay back without a chunk of subsidy. Not impossible, but difficult. We think vertical bifacial panels might be more viable, but then there's less shading & maybe issues with graffiti. www.sharenergy.coop/2025/05/21/s...sharenergy.coopSolar Canopies and community energy – Sharenergy 140
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 16/08/2026Part of it... It's the expense & disruption overall. I mean it can be done, clearly, and the problem is really that we (in the UK at least) require climate solutions to be profitable, which sort of misses the point of why we have a climate crisis in the first place. 130
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 16/08/2026I think it's a very different story in France www.pveurope.eu/e-mobility/f...pveurope.euFrance rules on mandatory solar for car parksMandatory solar canopies in French car parks: Paris 2023 decree details regulations & penalties for non-compliance. 130
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 15/08/2026We should be taxing car parking - protecting city centres and discouraging car-based retail. And you could reduce the tax if your car park is covered in solar or trees (public good). This would be a good climate solution. 010
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 15/08/2026This is no surprise. A lot of community energy groups looked into these and they're not usually viable: you can't sell the electricity for enough to pay for the steelwork and digging up the car park. Solar carports solve a bunch of problems but only get valued as one solution: energy generation... 230
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 15/08/2026Cos basically it doesn't pay for itself. Steel is too expensive, the groundwork very disruptive... The UK prefers to leave this stuff to the market and the market won't do this. 420
Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 14/08/2026I assumed those 'plus codes' were a proprietory Google Maps gimmick, but your post propted me to check that. Richard Lane @richplane.bsky.social · 13/08/2026I think he's cleverer than that. I think he knows he will face the investigation, and it may go against him.
