Pro tip: get a child interested in one or both. Then watching them is quality parent-child bonding time!

I'm partial to the idea dogs are excitable optimists, full of the heart-over-head passion that causes votes for Brexit. Plus, they're reactionary (barking at everything they see). Cats, OTOH, are louche, cynical, self-satisfied know-it-alls. Natural Bluesky lefties.

Seems we're talking past each other. Ultimately, I'd prefer an economics and culture that's inclusionary/inquisitive, not exclusionary/zero-sum. I also wish we discuss the actual benefits and costs of the EU (there are both) over grifters gaslighting us with entitlement jingoism and WW2 nostalgia.

Also, Brexit helped foster a lot of the xenophobic, racist bollocks we see today. There are very good cultural reasons to say 'how about we try to get along better with the places where most of us like to go on holiday?'

I'm no expert but think your argument smacks of zero-sum mercantilism. Our skills focus helped us (just about) cope with Brexit, but it doesn't mean we benefited, or won't benefit from freer trade with the EU. We want EU stuff (hence: deficit), and making it costlier is detrimental.

Dick Flabbergastedly @richmorrow.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
IMO it's delusional to push away close economies in favour of unrequited fraternal dreams. We might wish to focus on 'cultural alignment' over proximity but our supposed affiliates won't (and arent) doing the same. The US is obvious, but Canada/Aus are clear-eyed trade negotiators too.

Surely geography and economic reality prevails? The EU is closest, it always will be, so closer relations are the easiest way to improve the economy. Tbh I think it's all pretty irrelevant until the UK public see close ties as good and not a sacrifice. I think it needs at least another decade.

Dick Flabbergastedly @richmorrow.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Also this is pretty relevant
Burnham has developed a habit since becoming prime minister of opening up debates and then quietly retreating in the face of hostile fire, and any reversal of Brexit will require huge amounts of diplomatic acumen and political willpower both at home and in the EU.

You know what, I apologise; more fool me. What a bunch of craven bastards we have in charge. Once you can't even properly condemn black clad thugs cos you worry a few possible (very unlikely) voters might be upset, what the hell are you even in power to achieve?

It's both bullshit and totally mathematically and economically unworkable. On every level it is drivel. Why do media outlets offer it even the faintest semblance of credibility in their headlines?

Let's pretend he's serious, and do the math. There are 270 million adults in the US. Paying them $5,000 each would cost $1.35 trillion. The US federal government takes in $2.65 trillion a year in income tax. It's insultingly stupid horseshit. Your president has utter contempt for US voters.

I thought the exposition for Horizon Zero Dawn was too far-fetched (Spoiler: looney tech guy makes self replicating killer robots that eat anything and gives them no 'off' switch). I'm beginning to revise my assessment. In fact, he probably advertised his plan and had the biggest IPO ever.

I get that; I'd lose my liberal niceties and bay for blood if a group of evil bastards murdered my wife, kids and community. And I doubt I'd be very discriminating about who paid the price. Lots of undeserving people would lose, and the winners would the fuckers ginning it all up for power.

Dick Flabbergastedly @richmorrow.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Pretty sure it's possible to despise a savage act of evil butchery, be happy were every member of Hamas murdered in response, *and* still think it psychopathic overreach that tens of thousands of children were killed in a sustained act of revenge.

Oh, I totally agree it's way too slow. I can't understand the delay. But my cynical feeling is Burnham will see the political benefits of condemning it outweigh the costs.
100
Dick Flabbergastedly @richmorrow.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Even viewed cynically, I struggle to see why Burnham and Co won't condemn this. These scumbags will never vote Labour, and neither will their supporters. But I reckon many voters want to see masked bastards vilified, to feel we still have standards. What's the argument to *not* attack them?
030
Dick Flabbergastedly @richmorrow.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Maybe I'm naive but I predict Burnham will come out with something more full-throated. IMO he's got pretty good political antenna and must know not condemning gangs of masked men holding up infrastructure makes him look weak and demoralises key supporters.

Like some commentators here, I think Ridley Scott is a great visual director who occasionally lucks onto a great movie concept, but having sympathetic people act rationally isnt very high on his priorities, and he's bored of the xenomorph — which is a bit of an issue for an Alien movie!

Depressingly, I agree — fascism can't be forever eliminated, cos we can all be arseholes! But we can neuter the conditions it needs to metastasise (inequality, grievance, anger, xenophobia, corruption etc etc).

IMO, Trump doesn't have friends but peers, or 'tough guys' he wants to emulate. I'd guess he sees Kim as another hard bastard. Whereas 'allies' are useless bottom feeders to him, only useful to give him things he wants.

I know you're not allowed to say this during the current debate, but the reason the left dominates academics, art, comedy, and music is that the right has stupid, discredited ideas, they're not funny, and dull resentment does not make for good art. No grand conspiracy required.

Many things could be said about this article. I'll restrain myself to noting his praise of Kemi being 'teasing' rather than 'snide' to her opponents, shortly followed by him expressing surprise at how successful Andy Burnham's 'mateyness' has been so far. Just brilliant insight 🙄.

Been using one for years. For snoring, not apnea. I can't pretend it's comfortable but it works if you get the boiling/teeth imprinting correct. And if your dog doesn't think it's an amazing new chew toy.

Lightsabre/laser gun + force shield. When I was 13 that was the *shit*. Add in the sad, fatalistkc tone to many episodes and it opened my eyes to a new form of storytelling through animation. That overcomes space mullets.
