Letter to the Editor: Stop Big Real Estate: Vote ‘yes’ on Prop. G!
Neighbors have legitimate concerns regarding the need to use this highway. Detours create more stress and more pollution. There is nothing particularly ecological about Diablo Canyon-powered electric bikes and motorbikes taking over the stretch. Nor are yoga classes, skateboarding or parades activities which can not be staged elsewhere. Given the inhospitable fog and winds that beset the coast, these do not appear to be a great use of public space, profit making or not.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house at 2518 46th Ave. is listed on various rental websites for $6,300 a month, at the time of publication. It was originally listed at higher prices. The Apartment Plug: Is That Apartment Listing Real?
Apartments in San Francisco can move extremely quickly. Often, when a good listing goes up, you see that several people have already inquired within the first hour, and suddenly it feels like you need to act immediately. The sense of urgency makes you feel like there is no time to stop and think.

Letter to the Editor: Blooms from the Richmond: Ukrainian Art is Bringing Young People Together
A little over a year ago, we started Slavic Voice 4 Ukraine with a simple goal: we wanted young people to have a space to connect with Ukrainian culture and with each other. This idea is behind one of our newest projects, “Blooms from the Ashes: In Honor of Maria Prymachenko,” an international youth art competition celebrating Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko.

Commentary: The Missing Piece in the Great Highway/Sunset Dunes Debate
Throughout the past few years, media coverage has endlessly fixated on traffic volume metrics, safety statistics and granular debates about commute times. Yet, amid the noise of endless technical debates, something fundamental and crucial is missing from the conversation: the immense, transformational and long-term benefit of building a lasting community within Sunset Dunes Park compared to the fleeting, short-term convenience of turning it back into a coastal highway for car traffic.

Commentary: Making Sense of the Ballot Measures
I’ve worked with fellow community activists to create the inaugural Westside Forward Voter Guide. Our grassroots group evaluated selected ballot measures by asking four questions: Will they help working families and seniors afford to stay? Will they protect community participation and accountable government? Will they sustain essential public services? And will they ask the wealthiest people and largest interests to contribute their fair share?

Letter to the Editor: Why I am Not Following the Sierra Club Endorsements This November
State Sen. Scott Wiener, representing San Francisco, has worked overtime to weaken and limit the CEQA, a state law that requires state and local government agencies to analyze the potential environmental effects of proposed projects and to inform decision-makers and the public about those effects. CEQA also mandates the identification of ways to avoid or lessen environmental damage and the consideration of alternatives to projects. CEQA provides environmental safeguards for the protection of our communities.

Real Estate: John M. Lee
For decades, San Francisco’s west side was treated as the City’s quieter real estate bet: foggy residential blocks, family-run businesses, immigrant commercial corridors and rows of single-family homes that felt comparatively attainable by local standards. That old assumption is losing ground. In the Richmond and Sunset districts, limited housing supply, larger remodels, changing retail corridors and pressure for new housing along transit routes are altering both neighborhood identity and property values.

Everything Nice: A Warm Welcome on Taraval
Taraval Street has always matched the energy from the people who live around it – bakeries and coffee counters open early, and this stretch of Parkside keeps a slower pace than much of the City. Among the longtime neighborhood favorites, enters the newest arrival: Welcome Coffee & Goods, which found its home at 425 Taraval St., near 14th Avenue. The shop is both a place to order a coffee and a place to dig through the racks for vintage clothing. As the sign outside states, “Come for the coffee, stay for the goods.”

September used to be the month I returned to school after being released in the middle of June. That’s gone with the wind. San Francisco public schools opened up for business on Monday, Aug. 17, two weeks before Labor Day. My Napa grandsons, Emmett and Brooks (16 and 12) reported for academic duty in their schools on Aug. 10. Naturally, football practice began even before that.

Now that the 2026 legislative session has come to a close, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the work we’ve done together, and on the issues I hear about every day from neighbors across the City. When I go to Sacramento, I bring those conversations with me. Whether it’s concerns about public safety, the rising cost of living, access to healthcare or the well-being of our families and seniors, my goal is to turn those concerns into meaningful action.

Last December, San Francisco experienced a massive blackout that impacted the majority of the City and left us in the darkness for hours, and – for parts of San Francisco – for days. This impacted our street and traffic lights, causing autonomous vehicles (AVs) to stop in place, jamming up intersections and blocking emergency response vehicles.
