Our thoughts are with our colleagues, friends and the people of Nepal following today’s devastating floods and landslides. To everyone affected, and to the rescue teams working under extraordinarily difficult conditions: we stand with you in sympathy, solidarity and hope.

Tourism needs more strategic thinkers and fewer campaign thinkers. Destinations cannot market their way out of weak infrastructure, poor governance, low investor confidence, or fragmented ecosystems. Tourism is economic infrastructure, not just promotion. #TourismLeadership

Tourism growth without structure creates fragility. Record visitor numbers mean little if local SMEs, infrastructure, jobs, and communities are excluded from the value chain. The strongest tourism economies are not the loudest marketed. They are the best coordinated. #TourismEconomy

Tourism is not a department. It is economic infrastructure. The strongest destinations don’t just market tourism, they design ecosystems around it: SMEs, skills, infrastructure, investment, and community participation. #TourismStrategy #EconomicDevelopment

China–Africa’s next phase won’t be driven by opportunity spotting but by system integration. The edge will belong to those who can: • Align policy with capital • Coordinate across sectors • Build partnerships that scale Connection builds resilience. Resilience drives long-term growth.

Africa has access. That’s not the breakthrough. The constraint was never trade, it’s execution, alignment, coordination. Policy is moving. Systems aren’t. When flows of people, capital & influence expand, misalignment leaks value. Read the full article: 👉 tourism-excellence.com/from-trade-p...

From Trade Policy To Economic Power: How China’s Zero-tariff Policy Exposes The Critical Need To Align Trade, Tourism, And Investment At A Systems Level
China’s announcement of zero-tariff imports for goods from 53 African countries is more than a headline about trade deals. I see it as a signal that China’s approach toward Africa and other developing...

If trade is accelerating, why isn’t tourism keeping pace? Trade triggers business travel, investment flows & diaspora movement. But tourism? Still marketing-led. Still volume-chasing. Trade builds corridors. Tourism must design for them. Are you planning for tourists or economic actors?

Richard J @richjjuls.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
Trade policy just reshaped tourism. China’s zero-tariff access for 53 African countries isn’t just trade, it’s a signal. Trade moves first. Tourism follows. The winners won’t chase tourists. They’ll align with corridors of capital, supply chains & investment. Is your strategy aligned or outdated?

Tourism doesn’t fail from lack of demand. It fails from poor design. If SMEs aren’t embedded, value leaks out. Inclusive tourism isn’t social policy. It’s economic strategy. Value stays where systems are built to retain it. Is your model creating value or exporting it? #TourismStrategy #Economic

Tourism doesn’t create impact, it multiplies what’s designed. Without structure, value concentrates. With intention, it distributes. Tourism isn’t an industry. It’s an economic system. So ask: is your model creating value or just capturing attention? #TourismStrategy #Economy

Opportunity doesn’t attract capital. Structure does. Tourism isn’t underfunded due to demand, but weak investable systems. Investors assess: policy clarity, stability, scalable models, alignment & credibility. Build infrastructure, not promotion. #TourismInvestment #Governance #InvestorReadiness

Tourism attracts attention. Structured tourism attracts investment. Investors don’t fund potential—they fund clarity, stability & scalable systems. Stop marketing destinations. Start engineering tourism economies. #TourismInvestment #InvestmentStrategy #EconomicDevelopment #Governance

Short-term campaigns don’t fix structural gaps in tourism. They expose them. Real performance comes from systems: policy consistency, value chain alignment, institutional capability, and long-term measurement. Tourism is economic infrastructure. Build it that way. #TourismStrategy #Economic

If your board is only tracking marketing metrics, you’re not governing tourism, you’re reporting activity. Tourism performance isn’t a marketing outcome. It’s a system outcome. Strong promotion can hide weak ecosystems, fragmented stakeholders, and misaligned policy. #TourismBoardGovernance

South African tourism has a measurement problem. We celebrate arrivals, when we should be measuring economic impact: jobs, SMMEs, community income, and real transformation. Tourism must build the economy, not just fill planes. #Tourism #SouthAfrica #EconomicDevelopment #JobCreation #SMME #BEE

Misalignment between policy & execution is one of tourism’s biggest hidden risks. Strategy alone doesn’t deliver, governance discipline does. Align incentives, build execution capability, and measure real economic value, not just arrivals. #TourismStrategy #Governance #EconomicDevelopment

Tourism performance isn’t a marketing outcome. It’s a governance outcome. When policy, infrastructure, investment, and strategy are misaligned, no campaign can fix it. Marketing scales what governance has already made viable. Boards shape tourism results. Not campaigns.

Tourism isn’t seasonal. Poor planning is. Destinations with year-round value don’t rely on peak periods. They design systems: diversified demand, aligned stakeholders, and integrated local economies. Shift from campaigns to structure. That’s where real growth lives. #TourismStrategy #RealGrowth

Stakeholder alignment is a growth issue—not a communications one. Misalignment creates drag: slower decisions, weaker trust, and harder execution. Growth is not just speed. It is coherence. #StakeholderAlignment #GrowthStrategy #GovernanceLeadership

Tourism is often measured by arrivals. It should be measured by value distribution. High visitor numbers do not automatically translate into economic impact. The real question is: who benefits, how much, and how consistently? #ValueCreation #TourismStrategy

Tourism growth without structure creates unintended consequences. Leakages increase. Local participation remains limited. Investor confidence weakens. These are not marketing failures — they are design failures. #EconomicDevelopment

Most tourism strategies start with promotion. They should start with structure. Marketing can amplify a system — but it cannot fix a weak one. Strong tourism outcomes are built on systems first, campaigns second. #SystemsThinking #TourismDevelopment #Strategy #Governance

The real constraint in tourism isn’t demand. It’s alignment. Destinations succeed when policy, investment, and enterprise operate as one system — not in silos. That’s where value is created. #PublicPrivatePartnerships #Tourism #Coordination #EconomicDevelopment #AfricaAsia #DestinationDevelopment

We are scaling tourism without designing it. There is a persistent pattern across many destinations: We promote first. We structure later. This is not a marketing problem. It is a systems problem. #TourismDevelopment #SustainableGrowth #GovernanceMatters #EconomicStrategy

Tourism is not underperforming because of weak marketing. It is underperforming because of weak design. We treat it as promotion. It behaves like infrastructure. Without alignment (policy, investment, execution), results don’t last. #TourismStrategy #EconomicInfrastructure

Tourism strategy often fails long before a destination campaign performs poorly. It fails when governance and investment are disconnected. This is why I believe tourism strategy must be treated as a governance issue as much as a marketing issue. #TourismGovernance #DestinationStrategy

Tourism should be built as economic infrastructure, not marketed as a seasonal product. Destinations become competitive when their tourism systems are investable, coordinated, and capable of creating long-term local value. #TourismStrategy #EconomicInfrastructure #DestinationDevelopment

People often imagine board work as the moment a resolution is passed or a strategy is approved. In reality, much of the real value is created earlier. Good governance is built in the quieter moments where judgment is formed before pressure takes over. #BoardEffectiveness #DecisionQuality

One of the most important tourism questions is this: who owns the value? Not just who participates. Who owns. Participation is good. Ownership is better. A mature tourism economy builds both. #TourismOwnership #InclusiveEconomy #DestinationStrategy #EconomicDevelopment #TourismPolicy

A tourism board cannot carry national tourism growth alone. Expecting one institution to fix destination performance is unrealistic. Tourism growth is shared work. We need to stop overloading tourism agencies while under-addressing systemic constraints. #TourismBoards #TourismLeadership #Governance

Tourism narratives matter because they influence investment narratives. How a destination talks about itself shapes who pays attention to it. The strongest tourism brands are not simply attractive. They are credible. And credibility is what turns attention into trust. #DestinationBranding #Growth

A destination is only as future-ready as its institutions. We often discuss tourism readiness in terms of assets, infrastructure, and demand. A strong destination needs more than a compelling offer. It needs a capable institutional backbone. #TourismGovernance #InstitutionalCapacity #Leadership

Not every tourism problem is a tourism problem. Sometimes the root issue sits elsewhere. Tourism is connected to many other systems. Housing. Transport. Skills. Trade. Governance. Safety. Infrastructure. The best solutions come from diagnosing the whole picture. #SystemsThinking #TourismLeadership

Tourism leakage is still one of the most ignored issues in destination growth. We talk a lot about arrivals. If local businesses are not integrated, if procurement is not localized, and if value capture is weak, tourism becomes movement without transformation. #TourismStrategy #TourismPolicy
