The first time I came across "hackneyed" I looked it up in a version of the OED from one of those demo CDs on computer magazines. It meant "made trite by overuse". I didn't know "trite" either, so I looked that up, too. It meant "hackneyed". To this day I still don't know what either of them mean ;)
