Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 06/10/2026You'd think that, if their cushy lives aren't quite is cushy as they used to be, they might also think the same is true of people further down the food chain. But I guess that's not how they became rich. 1421
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 04/10/2026This and also the fact that extremists on both sides have done what they can to blur the distinctions. It suits Netanyahu if he can portray Western opponents as against the continued existence of Israel; and Hamas benefits too if they can sell their antisemitism as hostility to an oppressive regime. 0130
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I'm sure there are people out there who have taken note and are looking for the right opportunity for you. 010
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026It can be done. I got my job on the back of a grant I wrote when I was sick. I don't doubt that the FLF panel were more sympathetic to my project because I'd just had a kidney transplant. And several ERC grants take account of career breaks, and are intended to support people returning to academia. 210
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026But being on the job market when you can't work full capacity really sucks. 220
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I'm sorry. I've not seen your updates for a while so haven't been following 😔 110
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Some of the words we do have aren't even good. Like, to my ear, 'lethargic' has overtones of self-indulgence and laziness. 110
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Surely you would be a good person to write that paper? 110
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026As you said, it also makes for an incredibly blunt diagnostic tool. 120
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026And there's also the burnout fatigue where you can sleep for 12 hours and it barely scratches the surface of mental fatigue, where even writing an email feels too hard. Maybe we need more words. 130
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026And then sometimes when you've got early stage flu, you can be mentally fairly alert but the thought of having to put on shoes and walk somewhere seems completely unfeasible. And if you work out hard, you can be mentally alert and barely able to get out of a chair (me, today, post gym). 150
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 01/10/2026There are so many different ways to be tired it's surprising we only have a couple of words. Because there's also a difference between physical and mental fatigue. When my kidneys failed I could sometimes do three hours the gym just fine, but I couldn't process sentences in conversation. 260

Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I think you may be granting him too much by asking about his underlying assumptions. I think he just doesn't know what he's talking about. An earlier take suggested he thinks that there's only one way to spell out the details of a materialist account of the mind, and it entails that AIs think. 3200
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Luck, tenacity, and a lot of hard work. The last one is particularly key for the people who have to publish themselves out of challenging short-term teaching positions 🥹 Having supportive parents who can help with relocation costs goes a long way too. 100
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 21/09/2026If you don't understand how any of it works, what gives you the confidence to insist that there are only two options? 020
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Oops 🥹 We should do a call! I'm in LA though so I'm still three hours away. 001
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Happy Together is just gorgeous. They're all good but this is my favourite. Curious to see what you'll make of it. 030
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I always thought this one is underrated. The first time I watched it, I thought the chemistry was great. (The second time, I wondered why I had thought that, however.) 010
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Is it an a priori question whether a captive monkey with a headache has a higher standard of living than a free range chicken with a sore throat? One would hope we'd not have to commit to investigating this empirically. 100
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Maybe we'd not be assigned so much as incentivised to shift focus by grant allocation patterns. Perhaps I could live with that (and the consequent lack of funding). But the confident utilitarians would almost certainly come out on top of the funding pile, despite being basically quite silly. 110
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026That strikes me as a bit depressing though. What if we got assigned to work on grounding because the algorithm decided that philosophy of the social sciences is oversubscribed? 100
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I mean, you present both a conclusion from Sterelny, and his argument for it; and then present a much stronger conclusion without any additional argument. That does kind of suggest that the goal is to get a reaction ... 020
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Today I gave a talk here, in LA. The discussion was excellent. Now I am tired. slime-workshop.comslime-workshop.comSLIME 5 — UCLA, September 18–19, 2026An annual UCLA workshop on language, information, meaning and expression. Details coming soon. 140
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I'm a little bit sceptical. EPP (Econ, Psych, Philosophy) at Warwick is thriving and growing. We've also expanded our PPE program very substantially to offset financial pressures elsewhere. Perhaps Warwick unusual though. Certainly, other universities are under far more financial pressure. 030
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Well there are facts about what 'pseudo' means and good enough accounts of the nature of philosophy. If you want to use 'pseudo-philosophy' in a way that is independent of the meanings of 'pseudo' and 'philosophy' go for it, but don't expect others to follow. 110
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I say this because I don't think responding to analytic metaphysicians by saying "You're not doing real philosophy" is any more constructive than when analytic metaphysicians say the same to us. 101
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Surely pseudo-philosophy is fake philosophy? But there's a different between philosophy that's unproductive, and philosophy that's not real or bad. You might think that questions about metaphysical angels are stupid and pointless, but that's no reason to think they fail to be philosophy. 220
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 18/09/2026At the end @walterveit.bsky.social adds: "Most professional philosophers that engage in a priori philosophy don’t just waste their time, space (and trees) ... they produce pseudo-philosophy." Nothing about that second claim in any way follows from the first. Solid ragebait though. 140
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Not even close to being Kim's most controversial opinion, but still good trolling. 581
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 14/09/2026(As her former PhD student, and the one working most squarely in the field of animal minds, the Hurley memorial talk will be done my me. Unless someone has a better idea, in which case let me know; I'd certainly be receptive to a more glamorous or exciting option.) 010
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 14/09/2026We're also planning to honour Susan Hurley with a memorial talk, since next year marks 20 years since she died. Susan was professor at the University of Warwick between 1994 and 2005, and did some of her most influential work on animal minds while there. 151

Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 10/09/2026A shout out to @adrian-currie.bsky.social, @andrameneganzin.bsky.social et al. In 2024 I reviewed their short intro to the philosophy of paleoanthropology for Philosophy Compass. I thought it was a great, so asked Edouard Machery if we could do one too. That is how this paper came about. 150
Richard Moore @richardmoore.bsky.social · 10/09/2026The paper could also work to explain our field to empirical researchers who aren't sure what the philosophers contribute. 120
