I liked the MIDNIGHT MARVEL launch. All three titles were good enough that I'll check out the second issues next month.

This coming weekend, I'm a Guest at Necronomicon in Tampa. I hope to see some of you there. All my panels should be good, but I'm particularly excited about Plague Knight Q&A at 6PM Saturday. This will update everyone about the animated sword-and-sorcery movie I wrote, necrofl.org

Still no post-Dragon Con con crud. Getting this year's flu shot and the most recent Covid shot may have been a good idea for someone braving the crowds and habitrails.

Back safely from Dragon Con. Tired, but had a great time. Today will be mostly recuperation combined with as little work as possible. (I have to do a little to keep the wheels of production turning on the horror-themed ABC primer coloring books in hopes of having those available by Halloween.)

I left HWA many years ago and know virtually nothing about the current troubles. But the constant impression of turmoil and crisis the organization generates doesn't tempt me to go back.

I like REACHER (on Prime), but I'm not sure we need quite that many fight scenes per episode.

I suspect people will either like INFINITY BUFFET on Shudder a lot or hate it. I liked it a lot. Give it a try, but turn it off after ten minutes if you haven't gotten into it. Because it's all like that.

Here's my schedule of Gen Con events. They should all be good, but let me point out one in particular, the D&D with Authors one. This goes out to the world via streaming, but Gen Con attendees can also see it live, and based on past years, it'll be fun. www.gencon.com/event-catalo...

I thought BACK ROOMS was a really good horror movie. I think you'll like it if you like YELLOWBRICKROAD and PONTYPOOL. I hope they don't make sequels that try to explain everything.

Seems like they maybe should have put my name on the cover. Or sent me a copy. Or told me this was happening. But be that as it may, this is a sword-and-sorcery trilogy I wrote a while back, and I still think it's good. Hope some of you will check it out. www.drivethrufiction.com/en/product/5...

The Who is one of my all-time favorite bands, but I still think "Teenage Wasteland" is an odd musical choice for a Starbucks commercial.

I watched some of the new animated STRANGER THINGS show on Netflix. Maybe they weren't totally awful, but I had the same reaction I often have when a story reaches its grand finale, then the studio tries to continue it anyway, often by doing a prequel. Namely, I've already taken this ride.

I noted previously that all the female store clerks in my little Southern town tell me, "Have a blessed day." I've now noticed all the male clerks call me "Boss man." Neither offends me, but just as the former doesn't fit my metaphysical beliefs, the latter doesn't line up well with my self-image.

I see where some people are demanding the immediate removal of the Prez and his entire Cabinet. Others may see this as overreach leading to chaos, but I'm not sure we could get a whole lot more chaotic than what we currenntly have.

Even by slasher-movie standards, the characters in SCREAM 7 can take a LOT of punishment, First and foremost, the slashers themselves, but most of the characters, really.

I started doing my taxes. I've slogged through Schedules C and SE, which are always the worst bits for me, especially the latter. At the risk of jinxing myself, I'll express the cautious hope that maybe the rest of it won't be too bad.

There's supposed to be an anti-Trump, anti-ICE protest around here tomorrow. It's also forecasted to be, by local standards, cold as hell. But if the people in Minneapolis could turn out to protest in weather as cold as they're having, I'd feel wimpy if I didn't do it in central Florida.

020

Richard Lee Byers @richardleebyers.bsky.social · 24/01/2026

It'll be interesting to hear the Prez and his circle try to justify the new ICE killing in Minneapolis. Appalling and unconvincing, but interesting.

Is the audience supposed to already know what the Burn was? Because I don't. There are several Star Trek shows I didn't watch, and maybe this bit of lore was established in one of those.

CBR keeps having headlines declaring that a streaming service has "sealed the fate" of a show. Then I click on the story and it turns out "sealed the fate" means they renewed it for another season. Doesn't "sealed the fate" imply something negative?

In the last few months, I had a submission ghosted. Today, I had one rejected in a matter of hours. Each is dispiriting, but the ghosting is worse.

Maybe if Machado had won one of those shiny new FIFA Peace Prizes instead of just a boring old Nobel, the Prez would take her more seriously.

Started out 2026 with a bit of housekeeping. Made sure that each of my short stories that has yet to find a home is in submission, and that none of the submissions has gone unanswered for so long that it's likely the submission has been rejected and ghosted.

A local "Comic Con" going on this weekend has only voice actors for Guests. I realize the term "Comic Con" is used more loosely these days, but I still think that if an event is going to call itself that, there should be at least one or two comics pros on the Guest List.
