Every painting is a bit like a palimpsest, a trail of crumbs to find my way back except there is no going back, just forward until it surprises me. Every night the mooon is in a little different spot and I don't know how that happens. Where Is The Moon Now 10” x 20”, oil, 2026

Vanessa Machado de Oliveira suggests we live our lives: "as a spiritual ceremony where your relationship with unknownability and indeterminacy becomes more important than trying to fix the world into forms that can be categorized, ordered, ranked, and controlled." Read more in my new Substack post.

The first snow of the year doesn't try to advertise anything to you. It doesn't argue politics or make you sign up for something or ask you to take a survey. It is a gift. Ok, maybe by the end of the season you don't need any more snow, but it is still a gift. First Snow- 14" x 17" oil on linen 2025

A company I have used in Canada that produces stretcher bars now has to pay a 25% tariff. They are offering to eat 10% of the tariff but US customers will have a 15% price increase.

Back in Michigan after a vacation to SC, a State I have never been to. Filled with natural beauty and birds and a painful history. We stayed on one of the Sea Islands noted in this picture, where the Gullah Geechee people defended themselves during Reconstruction and still are from land developers.

A painter friend posted in frustration about what is happening in Washington... "I'm just going to paint". Let's not "just" paint. Let's paint and make art like it is the shining light leading us forward. Its going to get dark out there. Shown: Agnes Martin. She waited 20 years for her inspiration.

This is a look back to an 11" x 14" painting from 2019 which I'm not sure what ever happened to it. I like its loose feel and is what I want more of my paintings to feel like. Different directions in the work over the years are like waves that keep coming to shore.

I'm taking a short break from winter in South Carolina, the home of birds, salt marshes, 19 native tribes, and the Gullah, deep descendants of slaves. It's also the home of Nancy Mace and Lindsey Graham who certainly don't add to the beauty of the area. New blog post. richardkooyman.com/news.html

Really enjoying the “Lists” function. Make as many lists or feeds as you want: artist, friends, Galleries, politics, and then plug the different accounts in the appropriate list. This way you click on a list and only see those accounts you’ve added.

"The madman hangs in fancy homes They wouldn't let him near! He'd piss in their fireplace! He'd drag them through Turbulent Indigo" Joni Mitchel see Alt text
You wanna make Van Goghs
Raise 'em up like sheep
Make 'em out of Eskimos
And women if you please
Make 'em nice and normal
Make 'em nice and neat
You see him with his shotgun there?
Bloodied in the wheat?
Oh what do you know about
Living in Turbulent Indigo?

Brash fields crude crows
In a scary sky
In a golden frame
Roped off
Tourists guided by
Tourists talking about the madhouse
Talking about the ear
The madman hangs in fancy homes
They wouldn't let him near!
He'd piss in their fireplace!
He'd drag them through Turbulent Indigo

"I'm a burning hearth" he said
"People see the smoke
But no one wants to warm themselves
Sloughing off a coat
And all my little landscapes
All my yellow afternoons
Stack up around this vacancy
Like dirty cups and spoons
No mercy Sweet Jesus!
No mercy from Turbulent Indigo" Joni Mitchel
