Research! One of the joys and essentials of writing is becoming just enough of an expert in a subject to write credibly about it.

2/2 Successful stories - like good gags - have a structure which helps make them work, the best tend to follow the same foundations. Learn what this structure is and how the masters have used it.

000

Richard Stokes @richardastokes.bsky.social · 14/05/2026

1/2 There are many 'how to' write books out there for screenplays and novels. #SavetheCat does both, #JohnYorke covers narrative storytelling in all forms, #SydField is a stalwart. Read them all - but remember they are *guides* not rulebooks. That said - learn the rules before you break them.

And talking of formatting - check the internet, there are some very reasonable software packages which take away all the pain and heartache of doing it yourself. I used Vellum for Galileo Storm - but I'm not advertising - there are others. #SF #newwriter #crimethriller amzn.eu/d/0fORId90

2/2 Check typos using word software, make sure your formatting is consistent (see earlier post about looking professional) and ensure it makes sense, that you haven't repeated obvious errors like repeating chapter headings. If *you* haven't read it through once, why will an editor take it seriously?

010

Richard Stokes @richardastokes.bsky.social · 07/05/2026

1/2 When not making TV, I was a freelance editor on #Reedsy (still am, just currently inactive). I helped a few writers work through early drafts of their manuscripts and the *main* lesson I would give new writers before handing your work to a professional editor is; read it through yourself first!

010

Richard Stokes @richardastokes.bsky.social · 04/05/2026

2/2 Dialogue and prose you may have loved originally you can now see for what it is - some will work but some will feel forced, arch, overwritten or just plain bad. Be honest with yourself and begin the really hard work - re-writing.

000

Richard Stokes @richardastokes.bsky.social · 04/05/2026

1/2 Once you have finished your first draft, put it away for at *least* a week - preferably two, ideally longer. Your self-editing critical faculties will be all the better for having some space between finishing and re-reading.

000

Richard Stokes @richardastokes.bsky.social · 01/05/2026

"Don't get it right, get it written" - Rob McKee. Not a licence to rush or write just bollocks but a great guiding principle I live by. Get the ideas down, push through the problem areas and get to the end. It is always easier to edit a written page than stare at a blank screen.

000

Richard Stokes @richardastokes.bsky.social · 30/04/2026

First lesson - present your work professionally. For a screenplay invest in a software that will help you deliver work that readers, editors and commissioners will take seriously. Final Draft, Screenwriter are both pro level but shop around - there are other versions free or near-free on the net.
